Regular Season Round 42: Portland TB - Denver N. 117-97

Date: February 4, 2012
The Nuggets' legs weren't completely dead Saturday night, but completing a back-to-back-to-back set didn't come close to translating into a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Playing their third game in three nights, the step-slow Nuggets (15-9) lost their fifth consecutive game at the Rose Garden, this time 117-97. The snowstorm was in Denver, but it was a blizzard of 3-pointers in Rip City that did in coach George Karl's Nuggets. Portland appeared the much fresher team, even though the Blazers were playing for the third time in four nights. Blazer backup Nicolas Batum — who probably gets guarded closer in practice — did much of the damage with a career-high 33 points, including a career-high nine 3-pointers. Batum left to a standing ovation. The Nuggets were too tired to clap, even if they had wanted to. LaMarcus Aldridge added 29 points for Portland. "We just ran out of gas," Karl said. "Too much Batum and Aldridge and the 3-ball." The Nuggets got their obligatory slow start out of the way — they were down 11-3 — before Danilo Gallinari warmed up. But Gallinari would cool down. And he had a lots of company. The "Rooster" had 12 points in the first quarter (he led Denver with 20) and the Nuggets got eight points from Kosta Koufos, but the fresher Blazers still led 33-26. It had to be the "three games in three nights legs" that failed to close out the Blazers' 3-point shooters time and again. Batum had three wide-open shots from long distance early in the second quarter. When Wesley Matthews got an equally easy shot from 3-point range, it was 44-31 for Portland and Karl called a timeout to keep the damage to a minimum. But Batum, who had 17 points in the first half, kept hitting open 3s and the Nuggets understandably looked a step slow, a certain recipe for failure at the Rose Garden. Portland got sloppy before halftime and a 16-point advantage became a manageable 59-53 for a Denver team that shot 50 percent in the first two quarters and only had five turnovers. Ty Lawson had 11 of his 13 first-half points in the second quarter for Denver, at times getting down the floor so quickly that everyone else just pulled up and watched. By halftime, the Blazers were 9-for-18 on 3-pointers, the Nuggets only 3-for-11, and Aldridge was on his way to another monster night against a Karl-coached team with 15 points and six rebounds. Denver backup point guard Andre Miller, who had a game-high five turnovers in the loss to the Lakers the night before, had an exceedingly quiet seven minutes in the second quarter Saturday. The next time Karl called a stop-the-bleeding timeout, the weary Nuggets had just turned the ball over again and fallen behind 76-63 with 4:38 left in the third quarter. By then, Gallinari's shot had left him, Nene remained hopeless on offense and Koufos was practically holding the fort by himself. The third quarter was a 6-for-20 nightmare from the field for the Nuggets and they trailed 85-71 going into the fourth quarter. *Courtesy of www.denverpost.com
