Regular Season Round 41: Sioux Falls S. - Santa Cruz W. 103-112
Date: February 7, 2012
Although the Skyforce had two new faces making their home debut Tuesday night, the story was much of the same for the NBA D-League team as Sioux Falls fell to the Dakota Wizards 112-103 at the Arena. Minnesota Timberwolves rookie guard Malcolm Lee didn’t disappoint with 16 points and six assists in 24 minutes while former Oakland University center Keith Benson added 11 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double in four games. “I’m still trying to get the rust off and get my rhythm back,” said Lee, who was assigned to Sioux Falls on Monday after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in December. “Sometimes, going side to side while playing defense, it felt like I wasn’t as explosive. Other than that, I felt like it was OK.” Gabe Pruitt paced the Force with 26 points, including a 5-for-8 night from 3-point range, and Dominique Coleman added 19 points. Unfortunately for Sioux Falls, the same problems that have plagued the 7-22 squad throughout the season popped up again Tuesday. “We’ve had two culprits the entire year – bad shots and turnovers,” said Skyforce coach Mo McHone. “Somewhere during the game for three- or four-minute stretches, we take bad shots and have turnovers and then we’re in a hole and playing catch-up. I’m really disappointed because I thought we were over that, and it raised its head again tonight.” Dakota (13-13) took advantage of the miscues and turned them into lopsided scoring stretches after falling behind 25-21 at the end of the first quarter. But the key run came late in the third quarter. After seven straight points from Pruitt helped Sioux Falls knot the game at 70-70, the Wizards broke off a 12-4 run to close out the quarter and take an 82-74 lead. “It was just that little streak in the third quarter that lost the game for us,” said Lee, who played college ball at UCLA. “It just took off out of nowhere. We kept turning it over and taking bad shots, then we weren’t getting back on defense and they were getting layup after layup. It’s hard to beat a team when they’re scoring easy buckets like that.” Edwin Ubiles was on the receiving end of several of those easy points, finishing with a game-high 32 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for Dakota, while Marcus Dove added 21 points and Tommy Smith 12 points. Taylor Griffin, brother of NBA All-Star Blake Griffin, scored 13 points as the Wizards outscorEd Sioux Falls 84-36 in the paint and held a 43-33 rebounding edge. And while the large discrepancy in the paint and the third-quarter stretch were game changers for the Wizards, who may have played their final game in the Arena as Dakota after being purchased by the Golden State Warriors, McHone pointed to the Skyforce’s lack of chemistry as an underlying factor for the loss. “It seems like every game we’ve got someone new and the chemistry and the timing and everything else just isn’t there,” said McHone, whose team has lost six straight. “We just don’t have the chemistry. I don’t know if it’s because we’ve been making so many changes, but I was really disappointed in that tonight.” *Courtesy of www.argusleader.com
