Regular Season Round 28: Summerside S. - London L. 110-116

Date: February 9, 2012
The London Lightning used a big fourth quarter and a red-hot Eddie Smith to subdue a tough Summerside Storm team in Prince Edward Island on Thursday. The Lightning defeated the Storm 116-110 in a National Basketball League game. Coupled with the Quebec Kebs loss to Saint John Mill Rats, the Lightning's magic number to clinch first place is two. It was a night the Lightning needed someone to step up. The league decided to impose its one-game suspension on Lightning coach Micheal Ray Richardson so he sat the out the game. Assistant coach Michael Frijia and player-coach Shawn Daniels handled the team. Daniels was sitting out the game with an injured shoulder. Also missing was Gabe Freeman, who is out with a sprained ankle. When the Lightning needed something against the Storm, it was no surprise that it was Smith who provided it. Over the last two weeks, he's been coming off the bench to provide the big plays the Lightning have needed. Smith hit for a league-high 40 points. He came off the bench again but played more than 40 minutes. "He was terrific," Richardson said. "This was a big win for our confidence because with Shawn and Gabe missing, we proved we could win." Smith also added 11 rebounds. DeAnthony Bowden scored 22 for the Lightning with Rodney Buford hitting for 15. Mike Williams led the Storm with 23 points. The Lightning put up 44 points in the fourth quarter, limiting the Storm to 29. But despite being up by 10 with 75 seconds left in the game, the Lightning had to sweat out the final minute as the Storm refused to go away. Smith and Spears gave the Lightning some breathing room by hitting key foul shots. "We are a team that always plays well in the second half," Richardson said. As for his suspension, Richardson said he wasn't going to make a big deal about it. "I decided to just serve it and be done with it," he said. "I just left it alone. The Lightning are now off until Thursday when the Saint John Mill Rats come to the John Labatt Centre. *Courtesy of www.lfpress.com
