Regular Season Round 44: Erie Bay H. - Santa Cruz W. 118-128

Date: February 12, 2012
As cold as it was outside Tullio Arena, the Dakota Wizards torched the Erie BayHawks like Johnny Blaze in their 128-118 win Sunday night inside Tullio. The Wizards made 13 of their last 14 shots from the field to pull out the come-from-behind win. 'It's embarrassing,' Erie coach Jay Larranaga said. 'I'm embarrassed. I've got to do a better job of preparing them for the level of competitiveness and physicality and toughness that is necessary to win a professional basketball game.' Shooting a blistering 75 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, Dakota (14-14) made its final 11 shots from the field. The Wizards ended the game on a 37-21 run after falling behind 96-91 with 9 minutes, 1 second left. 'We showed no resistance,' Larranaga said. 'Didn't defend. Didn't compete. We got down by three points and came to the bench and acted like the game was over.' In a game in which there were 14 ties and 18 lead changes, Dakota's hot shooting helped them overcome Erie (14-16) getting a combined 56 points from former NBA veterans Michael James (6'1'-G-75, college: Duquesne) and Keith McLeod (6'3'-PG-79, college: Bowling Green). The two point guards each scored 28 points in defeat. 'We didn't clamp down,' McLeod said. Small forward Edwin Ubiles (6'6'-G/F-86, college: Siena), a 2012 D-League All-Star selection, had 10 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Dakota comeback. 'They started riding that play and we couldn't score on the other end,' James said. Sunday's game was originally scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m., but it was postponed because of inclement weather. The Wizards had played at Iowa Friday night and flew to Detroit Saturday morning. The Wizards said their flight out of Detroit to Erie nearly reached Erie International Airport before having to go back to Detroit because of the weather. 'A lot of guys were asleep and didn't know,' Dakota forward Marcus Dove said. 'I happened to wake up right when the flight attendant starting telling people. I was looking around. We were real low and then the pilot said we were turning around.' Unable to get another flight out of Detroit Saturday night, Dakota landed in Erie Sunday morning around 11:30. Sunday's game started at 6 p.m., but the short turnaround didn't seem to bother the Wizards when it mattered. 'For our guys to fight back, I'm so proud of them,' Dakota coach Nate Bjorkgren said On the other hand, the BayHawks had a day's rest after their 117-110 home win Friday night against the Maine Red Claws, but couldn't stop the Wizards in the fourth. 'They made a run and we just gave it away,' said Erie forward Mychel Thompson (6'7'-F-88, college: Pepperdine), who had 15 points off the bench. 'We didn't close it out like we should have.' Ubiles gave the BayHawks the most trouble. In the game's final 2 minutes, Ubiles hit two jumpers and had two assists. He found Maurice Baker for a 3-pointer and hit Tommy Smith for a dunk that gave the Wizards a 124-112 lead with 54.2 seconds left. 'He had a great fourth quarter,' Bjorkgren said. 'He was scoring and he was sharing. He made the right choice about four of five trips in a row.' The BayHawks also had five of 20 turnovers in the fourth that led to 13 fourth-quarter points for the Wizards. For the game, Dakota scored 32 points off Erie's 20 turnovers. 'It's hard when you're getting turnovers on one end and they're getting possessions on the other end,' James said. Courtesy of www.goerie.com
