Regular Season Round 53: Boston C. - Detroit P. 88-98
Date: February 15, 2012
Veteran guard Ben Gordon, who once scored 42 points in a playoff game in Boston, burned the Celtics again Wednesday night. Gordon, who had the 42 in a 2009 playoff game while playing for the Bulls, drilled four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter Wednesday, leading the Pistons to a 98-88 upset win. Coming off the bench with a 13.7-point scoring average, Gordon scored 22 points in 28 minutes and led the Pistons (now 9-22) on a 20-4 run bridging the third and fourth quarters, as Detroit rallied to overcome the second straight big game by Boston's Rajon Rondo. The Pistons were just 2-12 on the road coming in, but won with the Celtics missing Kevin Garnett (hip flexor). Rondo, who had a triple-double Sunday, tying his career high with 32 points and adding 15 assists and 10 rebounds, topped his career high with 35 points, but the Celtics lost for the third time in their last four games. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen scored just 10 apiece. The Celtics went just 19 of 32 from the foul line in falling to 15-13. Rodney Stuckey scored 25 points and Greg Monroe 22 for Detroit, while Chris Wilcox scored a season-high 17 for the Celtics. Playing their first season under former Boston assistant coach Lawrence Frank, the Pistons used a 6-0 run over the final 1:34 of the third quarter to take a one-point lead into the fourth, and then ran away with the game. The visitors had stayed in the game despite a 10-point third quarter by Rondo, who was hitting shots from everywhere. In the first half, he hit his first 3-pointer since Dec. 30, ending a personal 0-for-9 drought from behind the arc in this calendar year. Garnett was a gametime decision. He went through the shoot-around and coach Doc Rivers told the media before the game he would check with athletic trainer Ed Lacerte. Apparently, he got word Garnett would miss his first game of the season. *Courtesy of Yahoo! Sports
