Regular Season Round 45: Rio Grande VV - Canton C. 113-136
Date: February 16, 2012
Things were going just splendid for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers as they opened the second half against the Canton Charge on Thursday night on a roll. The Vipers has just shaken off a one-point halftime deficit to lead by seven with 8:32 remaining in the third. It appeared the Vipers were headed toward a possible blowout against the Charge, who only dressed eight players. But momentum is a funny thing. Not only did the Vipers miss shot after shot, but the momentum that carried them transferred over to the Charge. The Charge outscored the Vipers 35-9 to conclude the third period and edge the Vipers 136-113 at State Farm Arena. Manny Harris led the way with 46 points as the Charge won the first of a two-game series which resumes Saturday at 7 p.m. in Hidalgo. Marcus Morris scored 18 for the Vipers and Will Conroy had 14. “We were having a hard time guarding their screen and roll,” Vipers coach Nick Nurse said. “I think they shot seven or eight straight 3s in the blink of an eye. It was just breakdown on dribble penetration. “They were awfully open and they are going to make those shots. You have to contest those things a little bit and we weren’t doing that. Once they get hot, it sort of spreads onto the rest of the guys and they make those shots.” Canton led by as many as seven in the first half. By the time the Vipers (20-14) mounted their 12-4 run to open the second half, it seemed that the Charge’s depleted roster would come back to haunt them. But, like Nurse said, in the blink of an eye, Canton looked more like the winners of five of their previous seven games, rather than the squad carrying only eight players. While the Charge made it rain from beyond the arc, the Vipers self-destructed as they deviated from what worked well in the first half, which was feed center Greg Smith down low. After tallying 13 points in the first half, the 6-foot-8 Smith only made one bucket the rest of the way as Canton’s big men Kyle Gibson and Dante Milligan who defended him well. “They did a good job of double teaming him which made him ineffective in the low block,” Nurse said. “We had some good stuff going in the screen and roll. We got away from that. We self destructed there.” Smith finished with 15 points and four rebounds, while Conroy amassed a game-high 18 points. If the Vipers look to rebound on Saturday against the Charge, they will need Conroy and Smith to connect as was the case in the first 30 minutes. “One thing (Conroy) can do well is get the ball to the guys,” Nurse said. “He draws attention and is a high-level player for us. “But we have to go back to the film room and correct those mistakes.” *Courtesy of www.themonitor.com
