Regular Season Round 49: Santa Cruz W. - Sioux Falls S. 117-98

Date: February 20, 2012
Returning home from a successful road trip, the Dakota Wizards kept the good vibes going. Fresh off a two-and-a-half week journey, the Wizards were back in the Civic Center and back in the win column, posting a 117-98 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Monday night. Shaking off a slow start, the Wizards built a double-digit lead early and never trailed while stretching their season-best winning streak to four games. Dakota posted its fifth win in six matchups with Sioux Falls, 'I was pleased with the way with stuck with it,' Wizards coach Nate Bjorkgren said. 'There were some runs in and out but we were able to counter some of those runs as the game went on. 'We came up with some great stops along the way and I liked the way we attacked in the fourth quarter.' Edwin Ubiles (6'6'-G/F-86, college: Siena), who will represent the Wizards in the D-League All-Star Game, scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half to help stake Dakota to an early lead. Mike Anderson (6'7'-F-86, agency: Hart Sports Mngm, college: VCU) scored 23 of his 24 after the intermission and hit some big shots as the Wizards pulled away. Anderson said the long road trip was beneficial. 'We've been on the road for two and a half weeks, we've had a lot of time bonding, a lot of camaraderie,' Anderson said. 'We haven't been practicing real hard, but efficiently, getting down the fundamental principles on defense.' The Wizards started to put things together on the road trip, and showed the results back at home. 'We've been playing together on both ends of the floor,' Bjorkgren said. 'Playing team defense and sharing the ball on offense. Things work out well when you're doing that.' Stefhon Hannah (6'1'-G-85, college: Missouri) hit 11 of 16 shots from the field and finished with a game-high 26 points for the Wizards (17-14). Hannah came into the game averaging nearly 15 points since being acquired by Dakota last month. 'Different guys were able to perform at a high level in different parts of the game,' Bjorkgren said. 'Edwin, Mike, Stef ... I'm sure I'm forgetting some ... they all had their moments.' Ubiles and Marcus Dove (6'9'-F-85, college: Oklahoma St.) each scored eight first-quarter points as the Wizards took the lead early. Dakota reeled off a 10-2 run punctuated by Ubiles hitting a long two-point jumper and then finishing in transition. The Wizards closed the period scoring eight of the final 10 points for a 28-15 lead. Dakota stretched the lead to as many as 16 points in the second quarter. Back-to-back baskets by Shy Ely, the second coming as the shot clock ran out, gave the Wizards a 38-22 advantage with 7:44 left in the half. The Skyforce countered with its best stretch of the first half, trimming the deficit to eight points before Ubiles stopped Sioux Falls' momentum with a dunk with 2:54 left in the half. Hannah and Anderson hit three-pointers and Hannah finished in transition as the Wizards took control early in the second half. Anderson contributed nine points in a 12-4 burst that gave Dakota a 75-58 lead. 'Anderson played well tonight,' Bjorkgren said. 'I want him to play good defense and rebound and he also finished strong on some shots tonight.' Ely opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and finished strong on a fast break off a Sioux Falls turnover to make it a 20-point Wizards margin. Minutes later, a 3-pointer from Hannah and a dunk by Anderson in transition made it 97-74. 'We're a good team in transition,' Anderson said. 'We're fun to watch when we're playing like that.' Dakota scored 25 points in transition to the Skyforce's 18. The Wizards also had the edge in the paint (60-52) and on the offensive glass (15-11 in second-chance points). Trey Gilder (6'9'-F-85, college: Northwestern St.) led Sioux Falls (9-25) with 20 points. Anthony Mason (6'7'-F-87, college: St.John's) had 19, Brian Hamilton 17 and Nick Covington 10. Marquis Blakely had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points. Dove grabbed 11 rebounds and Anderson 10 as the Wizards outrebounded the Skyforce 53-41. Maurice Baker dished out a game-high 10 assists as Dakota won for the eighth time in 12 home games. 'I think we're hitting our stride at the right time,' Anderson said. 'We had a chance to finish off strong, get a few days off and get back in the gym.' After the all-star game this weekend, Dakota hosts Iowa on Tuesday and Bakersfield on Wednesday.
