Semi-Finals Game 1: Adelaide - Bulleen B. 71-73
Date: February 25, 2012
Reigning WNBL champions the Bulleen Boomers have secured a home Grand Final and in doing so, have become favourites to go back-to-back by defeating the Adelaide Lightning in a thrilling Semi Final clash in Adelaide on Saturday afternoon, 73-71. With scores tied in the dying moments, the Lightning’s Abby Bishop blocked the shot of Rachel Jarry under the basket, the ball spilling to Bulleen star Liz Cambage who made the lay-up and sealed the win for the Boomers. For Bulleen, Cambage dominated with 29 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Jarry was also impressive, finishing the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. For the Lightning, Abby Bishop was gallant in her side’s defeat, finishing with 23 points. Suzy Batkovic, who fouled out with less than a minute to play, finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Bulleen were the quicker of the two out of the blocks, running the floor well and jumping out to an early 10-4 lead, with Jarry and Cambage both hurting the Lightning early. Batkovic kept Adelaide scoring in the early going, her team looking for her inside as she dropped six out of the team’s first seven points. Bulleen led by as many as nine points in the first term, before Adelaide trimmed the lead to six at the first break. The scores remained unchanged for nearly the first two minutes of the second term, before Adelaide struck twice through Batkovic and Jo Hill to get to within two points. Bulleen steadied however and pushed the lead back out to as many as nine, as both teams wrangled with momentum. The Boomers clung to an eight point lead going into half time. Bulleen’s tower in the middle, Liz Cambage, went down clutching her ankle early in the third term as Adelaide were able to capitilise with a few consecutive baskets thanks to some good full-court defensive pressure. Cambage would only miss a few minutes, receiving some treatment before returning to the floor and registering a quick bucket in the paint. The Lightning were within three points before Bulleen steadied again, and got back out to a seven point lead with just over 3 minutes to play in the third. They took a five-point lead heading into what promised to be a tough final term. Bishop dominated the opening minutes of the final quarter. A huge three pointer from the Lightning forward saw Adelaide draw level. She immediately picked up a steal and ran the full length of the floor to make a lay-up and draw a foul. She converted to give the Lightning a three-point lead, scoring 13 consecutive points for the Lightning. It would be short lived, with Liz Cambage scoring seven quick points of her own, drawing Suzy Batkovic’s fourth personal foul on her way to reclaiming Bulleen’s lead, which shot back out to five points. A steal from Cambage and lead-pass out to an open lay-up for Jo Leedham saw Bulleen out to a nine point lead, sparking a quick time-out from Lightning head coach Peter Buckle. When Liz found a wide-open Leedham for a jump-shot, before Leedham then collected a steal and found Jarry for the lay-up, Bulleen were out to a 10 point lead with under four minutes to play and looking to be running away with the contest. Bishop and Batkovic both found their range and connected on a pair of long-range jump-shots out of a time-out to bring Adelaide back to within six points. Jo Hill drew a foul on a rebound and sunk a pair of free-throws, and then got the ball back on a Bulleen turnover, with Bulleen failing to score for three consecutive minutes. After Edmonsdon made a strong baseline drive and lay-up to bring the game back to within two points, the Lightning then drew level following a seal and lay-up from Batkovic, with a minute to play. The final minute was scrappy with both teams desperately trying to get ahead. Adelaide’s Edmondson missed two free-throws before Bulleen took the ball deep into their offense, seeing Cambage finally seal the game with an easy lay-up and a ticket to a home Grand Final in a fortnight’s time. The Lightning now must defeat the winner of tomorrow’s second Semi Final between Dandenong and Townsville in next week’s Preliminary Final in Adelaide to earn a spot in the season’s final game.
