Semi-Finals Game 1: Dandenong R. - Townsville F. 77-66
Date: February 26, 2012
In stifling conditions at the Dandenong Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the Dandenong Jayco Rangers outlasted a determined Townsville Fire to win 77-66 and secure themselves a place in the preliminary final against Adelaide next weekend. With both teams fighting to keep their season alive neither gave the other any quarter in a tightly fought game that saw the margin held to single figures until the closing seconds. Dandenong won the game in the paint, making 48 points to Townsville’s 22. Jenna O’Hea (24 points) was supported by Krista Phillips who had an outstanding game for the Rangers, pulling down six rebounds in the first quarter from a total of 14 boards, to go with 17 points and three emphatic blocks. Shanavia Dowdell (16 points, nine rebounds) and Nadeen Payne (18 points, six rebounds) played strong post-up basketball to keep Townsville in the contest. O’Hea was on fire and together with Kath MacLeod, took Dandenong to an eight-point lead near the end of the first period. Townsville fought back thanks largely to Dowdell who provided a strong target inside with six points to close the gap to 19-16 at the first break. The second quarter was a defensive struggle with neither side able to get a decisive break. Dowdell continued her strong game inside adding eight points to her total while the Rangers shared their baskets between them, to be locked at 34-33 at the half. A run of baskets from Payne and Micaela Cocks in the first three-and-a-half minutes allowed Townsville to wrest the lead from Dandenong. From there, Townsville lifted for a 13-5 run to lead the game by nine but three late points from Clare Papavs closed the gap to six, keeping the Rangers in touch at three quarter time. With the season on the line the intensity lifted for the final quarter with both sides trading baskets until Tegan Cunningham went on a six-point run, to bring the game back to 64-65 before being forced to the bench with five fouls. Phillips dominated the Rangers’ defence keeping the Fire scoreless in the final four minutes. A spectacular offensive rebound and stick-back by Alison Downie and two points from Phillips gave Dandenong a two-possession lead, which the Fire could not overcome. The Rangers will travel to Adelaide next Sunday to attempt to repeat their recent form against the Lightning, and earn a final showdown with Bulleen. *Courtesy of WNBL
