D League
Regular Season Round 51: Santa Cruz W. - Iowa E. 127-110
Date: February 28, 2012
The Dakota Wizards havent had this much fun in years -five years, in fact. The Wizards beat the clock three times Tuesday, then beat Eastern Conference leader Iowa when it mattered most, 127-110 at the final horn. In doing so, the Wizards extended their winning streak to five games, their longest streak since 2007. That run ended with the Wizards victory in the D-League championship game. Edwin Ubiles (6'6'-G/F-86, college: Siena) dominated for the Wizards, scoring 41 points and dishing out six assists. Ubiles was 18-for-26 from the field and drained four 3-pointers. My team recognized I was hot and they kept looking for me, Ubiles said. I made some open shots. I tried to make plays down the stretch in the second half. Jeremy Tyler (6'10'-F-91) got his first stint since his assignment from Golden State, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. He played hard when he was out there, Ubiles said. We went to him and he made some plays as well. Having him as a presence in the post makes people worry about him. Marcus Dove (6'9'-F-85, college: Oklahoma St.) added 17 points and Stefhon Hannah (6'1'-G-85, college: Missouri) and Mike Anderson 13 each. The Wizards shot 55 percent. Dakota returned last week from a lengthy road trip on fire and not even an eight-day layoff cooled them off en route to their seventh win in eight games. That break came at a perfect time. We bounced around from airport to airport and came home for a quick game, Wizards coach Nate Bjorkgren said. We needed that break. Bjorkgren wasnt concerned with the time off, nor the appearance of a new body in the lineup. These guys are used to players coming and going and when a player is assigned he could be here one game or five games, Bjorkgren said. They know their turn is going to come. Everybody will get their chance. The 20-year-old Tyler came to the Wizards averaging 1.9 points and one rebound in 14 games with the Golden State Warriors. He was the 39th pick of the 2011 NBA draft. Tyler didnt waste any time getting acclimated to his surroundings. The 6-foot-10, 260-pounder scored the Wizards first basket less than one minute into the game and added another two possessions later. Tyler had 13 points and eight rebounds in the first half, helping the Wizards to a 64-54 lead. The teams exchanged baskets through much of the first quarter, which ended with the Wizards holding a 34-27 edge on Andersons steal and pull-up 3-pointer as the clock ran out. The second quarter ended on Ubiles buzzer-beater for his 14th point of the half. He scored eight of the Wizards last 10 points of the second quarter and 11 of their first 13 of the third. Anderson was fouled and made a free throw with one-tenth of a second left to give the Wizards a 93-83 lead heading into the final quarter. After a slightly ragged end to the third quarter that saw Dakota turn the ball over eight times in 13 possessions, they righted the ship and cruised the rest of the way. Ubiles says the suddenly-surging Wizards are just learning to play together at the right time. Things just came together, Ubiles said. Fortunately were rolling right now. Halfway through the season we have a better feel for each other. Moses Ehambe led the Energy with 22 points. Nick Murphy and Curtis Stinson had 19 points apiece, Andrew Drevo added 16, and Ben Strong and Mike Efevberha had 15 apiece. The Wizards play three of their next four games at home, including tonights game against Bakersfield. Courtesy of https://bismarcktribune.com
