Regular Season Round 1: Mayaguez - Arecibo 80-70

Very important is a road loss of second ranked Capitanes (0-1) against leader Indios (1-0) on Thursday night. Visiting Capitanes were defeated by Indios in Mayaguez 80-70. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It looked good early as Capitanes took an 4-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Indios had a 24-19 second period charge getting the lead and Capitanes were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 70-80. Indios dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Capitanes' 32. Indios forced 23 Capitanes turnovers. American guard Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC) fired a double-double by scoring 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Guard Andres Ortiz (188-86) chipped in 12 points. American-Panamanian guard Danilo Pinnock (196-83, college: G.Washington, agency: SportsTalent) produced 25 points and 5 rebounds and the former international swingman David Cortes (190-81) added 14 points respectively for lost side. Capitanes' coach rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. It was the only win of host team this round and in all other games visitors recorded victories. Indios keep a position of league leader, which they share with 3 other teams. Defending champion Capitanes still closes the standings with one game lost. Indios' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Brujos in Guayama and it will be for sure the game of the week. Capitanes will play on the road against the league's leader Vaqueros in Bayamon.
