Regular Season Round 52: Canton C. - Iowa E. 122-107
Date: March 1, 2012
A proud Colorado State product, Charge forward Travis Franklin has thoroughly enjoyed the Rams’ recent wins against college basketball heavyweights New Mexico and UNLV. Franklin’s chest swelled, much like the Rams’ NCAA Tournament résumé. “We should get in,” Franklin said with a big smile, wearing a Colorado State T-shirt. “I’m going to write (the selection committee) a letter.” After his own performance Thursday night, the 23-year-old rookie must feel like his words carry great weight. Franklin scored a season-high 29 points off the bench to lead six Charge players in double figures in a 122-107 win against the Eastern Conference-leading Iowa Energy at Memorial Civic Center. Franklin, who entered the night averaging 7.1 points, scored 15 second-quarter points as the Charge built a double-figure lead and then held on in the second half. “They kept coming to me,” Franklin said of his teammates. “They knew I had a matchup that was easy for me off the dribble. So we kind of exploited that the whole second quarter.” The 6-foot-7 Franklin made 10 of 12 shots from the field and 9 of 10 from the foul line as the Charge improved to 18-17. The Charge committed 10 of their season-high-tying 22 turnovers in the first quarter. Once they stopped that, Iowa had no answer for them offensively. Canton shot a season-best 60.9 percent from the field and made 32 of 39 free throws (82.1 percent). All five Canton starters scored in double figures. Kyle Gibson totaled 20 points and five rebounds, while point guard T.J. Campbell went for 19 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. He made 12 of 13 free throws. Big men Dante Milligan and Frank Hassell combined for 28 points and 17 rebounds as the Charge held a dominating 43-23 advantage on the boards. Antonio Graves scored 15 points in his first start of the season. *Courtesy of www.cantonrep.com
