Regular Season Round 19: Asteras - Athinaikos 43-65

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Athens: Athinaikos (#1) and Asteras (#5). Asteras was crushed at home by 22 points 43-65 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Athinaikos. Asteras managed to win second period 14-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Athinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Asteras' 34. They outrebounded Asteras 36-23 including a 31-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Athinaikos looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 4 passes made by Asteras' players. Worth to mention a great performance of British power forward Chantelle Handy (191-87, college: Marshall) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 5 rebounds (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field). International guard Olga Hatzinikolaou (181-81) contributed with 5 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Athinaikos' coach Thanasis Adamopoulos felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Nikitta Gartrell (175-88, college: N.Carolina St.) answered with 11 points and 9 rebounds and Latvian center Zenta Melnika (197-91) added 13 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Asteras. Athinaikos (19-0) have an impressive series of eighteen victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with a perfect record of 19 victories in a row. Newly promoted Asteras keeps the fifth position with eight games lost. Athinaikos' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Athens Panathinaikos.
