Regular Season Round 67: Toronto R. - Golden St.W. 83-75

Date: March 4, 2012
A day after owner Joe Lacob said the Warriors will never purposely lose games to secure a draft choice, it didn't appear as though his team had gotten the message. "There has been a lot of talk in the media regarding intentional losing in order to advantage future draft positioning," Lacob wrote in an e-mail to The Chronicle on Saturday. "That will NEVER happen. Never. We are working very hard every day to change the culture of this organization. "This Warriors team works very hard and we are proud of their efforts. We will continue to try to win not only every game, but every single quarter and every single possession. Teaching a team to lose is just NOT an option." The Warriors proved they're already well aware of how to lose Sunday, going through the motions against an inferior team and reaching new lows for offensive ineptitude in an 83-75 snoozer to the Raptors at the Air Canada Centre. The Warriors (14-20) secured another losing road trip by shooting 27.5 percent in the second half and scoring 28 points - four off the franchise-worst 24-point performance against Minnesota in 2004. Power forward David Lee had 12 rebounds and 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. No other Warrior shot better than 43 percent from the floor, and they were outboarded 51-41. All of this against the Raptors (12-25), who had lost six of their past eight games and were without their best player, center Andrea Bargnani. "It was a bad loss," coach Mark Jackson said. "It was a very disappointing loss. This one stings." That was obvious in the postgame locker room. Usually players rush to the plane in an effort to get to the next city, in this case Washington, D.C., for the next night's game. After this one, the players moped around the locker room, talking in library tones or staring off into a space of bewilderment. "I don't know," said shooting guard Monta Ellis, who had 20 points on 8-of-22 shooting and seven assists. "Who knows? I don't know what to tell you. We had a 10-point lead, and I don't know what happened. "We should have won. We gave this game away. It's terrible." The Warriors, playing without Stephen Curry (right foot) in the starting lineup for the fourth consecutive game, had a nine-point lead at halftime and a 52-42 lead 2:48 into the second half. They went on to score six points in the final 9:12 of the third quarter and watched their lead evaporate. Without their point guard, the Warriors have averaged 80.3 points a game on the road trip. In those four third quarters, they've averaged 15.3 points, 32.9 percent shooting and 4.5 turnovers. "Obviously, we need to change something, because that's probably been our demise," rookie swingman Klay Thompson said. "Once again, we were thoroughly outplayed in the third quarter," Jackson said. "We gave them hope and forced ourselves to try and win the game a second time. You've got to understand as a player that the opposing team is going to come out of the locker room with some adjusting and with more energy. We have not responded. "We talk about it, talk about it, talk about it, but we've done nothing to change it." *Courtesy of www.sfgate.com
