Semi-Finals Game 2: Adelaide - Dandenong R. 78-91
Date: March 4, 2012
For the first time since 1987, two Melbourne-based teams will battle it out in the 2011/12 WNBL Grand Final after the Dandenong Rangers defeated the Adelaide Lightning in Sunday afternoon’s Preliminary Final, 91-78 to set up a showdown with reigning champions the Bulleen Boomers next Sunday at The Cage. For the Rangers Jenna O’Hea finished with 28 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists, while Tegan Cunningham also had a hot hand, finishing with 18 points. For Adelaide, Suzy Batkovic finished with 34 points while Amy Lewis finished with 17 points. The game started tight, with both sides trading early blows. It was clear that Krista Phillips (14 points, 14 rebounds) was going to be an integral component in Dandenong’s assault, as she worked hard on the glass in the early going and made some key baskets as she looked to curb the influence of both Suzy Batkovic and Abby Bishop at the other end of the floor. Keeping both players down was always going to be a task, and it was Bishop who started the most active offensively in the first term connecting on a few early buckets, but it wouldn’t be long before the Lightning veteran, Batkovic, started to take a stranglehold on the game. The Rangers held a slender lead for most of the first term, five being the biggest margin through the work of Jenna O’Hea, Steph Cumming and Krista Phillips. The Lightning rallied late in the quarter however, Batkovic dominating on the low block to help give Adelaide a two-point lead into quarter time. The second term played out much like the first, both teams jostling for the advantage. Adelaide maintained a slender lead through the shooting of Marino, as scores were hard to come by in the early going. With O’Hea, Phillips and now Tegan Cunningham also contributing offensively for the Rangers, and after a Steph Cumming basket with just under five minutes to play, Dandenong took back the lead for the first time in the quarter. It would be short lived, with Batkovic again dominating late in the quarter to not only regain the advantage for her side, but push the lead for the Lightning out to six points at the half, 41-35. Adelaide managed to put up nine more field goal attempts in the first half (39-30) thanks in part to their impressive effort on the offensive glass, reeling in 10 offensive rebounds to five for the Rangers after two quarters. Adelaide came out firing in the third, Marino and Bishop quickly extending their side’s lead out to 13 points with 8.51 to play. But Dandenong responded quickly, three quick baskets from Tegan Cunningham saw the lead back into single digits, and after a mid-range jump-shot dropped for Krista Phillips, the Rangers were back to within two, with just under five minutes to play in the third. The teams traded baskets, with Suzy Batkovic and Amy Lewis impressing for the Lightning, while Tegan Cunnigham and Steph Cumming all connected on some tough buckets late for the Rangers to keep things tight. Only one point separated the sides with 1.45 left before three-quarter time. A turnover in the backcourt by Marino saw Kath MacLeod make a short turnaround jump-shot to give the Rangers the lead yet again, and after Batkovic made one of two free throws down the other end of the floor, the scores were tied with less than a minute to play. Amy Lewis attacked the basket with only moments on the clock and made a lay-up in traffic to give the Lightning a lead by two going into a nail-biting last term. O’Hea made a couple of mid-range jump-shots and Steph Cumming also connected to see Dandenong take a quick four point lead early in the fourth as the Rangers lifted their intensity. Cumming left the game early in the fourth with a corked thigh as Bishop spun and scored to bring the lead back to two points. The quality of play at the offensive end of the floor lifted and both sides went basket for basket, the likes of MacLeod, Batkovic and O’Hea all leading by example. A critical moment in the game came when Tegan Cunningham missed an open three pointer from the corner but followed up her miss, rebounded and made the lay-up to give the Rangers a six-point lead with five minutes to play, as the momentum clearly shifted in Dandenong’s favour. Another quick couple of buckets saw Lightning head coach Peter Buckle call a time out with 4.07 to play, with the Rangers taking a 10 point lead into the huddle. It failed to stem the flow, and after O’Hea stole the ball and ran the full length of the floor for a wide-open lay-up, the Rangers’ lead was out to 12 points with only minutes to play, ultimately seeing the side run away with the memorable 13-point win. Dandenong shot better than 60 per cent from the field after quarter time, and as they did last week, ran home the stronger of the two sides, scoring on their last 14 trips up the floor. The victory sees Dandenong’s win-streak rise to eight in a row, as they work towards their ninth, which, should they claim it, will give them the 2011/12 WNBL Championship. Only one team stands in their way: cross-town rivals and reigning Champion Bulleen Boomers, who they will face next Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm AEDT at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, The Cage.
