Regular Season Round 75: N.Orleans H. - Charlotte B. 71-73
Date: March 12, 2012
The Hornets battled all the way back from the depths of a 24-7 Bobcats run, giving them a chance to tie Charlotte with 5.2 seconds to play. They couldn’t come all the way back, though. Charlotte center Bismack Biyombo blocked veteran forward Trevor Ariza at the rim as time expired, the Hornets’ game-tying chance stunningly stuffed 10-feet in the air and inches from the ball being in the cylinder. New Orleans lost 73-71 to the NBA’s worst team. “I did what I know that is a high-percentage shot,” Ariza said. “I went to the basket real strong. He made a great play at the basket.” Said Biyombo, “I had to make a decision and once I saw him jumping in the air, I thought I can block that shot. I thought just jump smart and don’t foul.” The Hornets (10-32) lost despite a late-game outburst from second-year player Al-Farouq Aminu, whose drives to the rim in the final five minutes gave the Hornets a chance. Aminu finished with eight points off the bench. Chris Kaman added 12 points and 16 rebounds and Jarrett Jack recorded 15 points but had a game-high six turnovers. New Orleans shot just 38.5 percent, but hit 5 of 12 3-pointers and 6 of 7 free throws. Still, 17 turnovers led to 14 Charlotte points and the Hornets were outrebounded by 10. Charlotte had won just two road games this season before pulling off the stunner in the Arena. “This one is a bad loss,” Ariza said. “Even for us, I feel like this is a bad loss. This is a game that we should have won.” When asked his thoughts on the game, Hornets coach Monty Williams hesitated to say anything at all. “When you lose a game like that, you tend to say things that you probably need to evaluate before you say it,” Williams said. “It’s just tough. Losses are tough no matter how you slice it.” New Orleans led 51-47 midway through the third quarter and seemingly had the game handled. But Charlotte (6- 34) closed the third quarter with a 10-0 and midway through the final quarter, had put New Orleans in a 71-58 deficit. But then Ariza made a dunk, Kaman hit a 17-footer, Jack drilled a long-range 3-pointer and Aminu laid the ball in and suddenly, the Hornets were within 71-67. A minute-and-a-half later, they’d get to within 71-69 on Aminu’s jumper. But Charlotte’s Boris Diaw answered with a 4-foot hook. After exchanging empty possessions, Jack hit a 6-footer and again New Orleans pulled within a basket. New Orleans got the stop it needed on the defensive end, but a Jack offensive foul left the game still one bucket away. “Jarrett’s fouls is hard to swallow,” Williams said. “I don’t know how plays like that are called down the stretch. Obviously, I have a different point of view than the refs.” Diaw missed a 3-pointer and Jack got the rebound. And that set up the shocking final play. Gerald Henderson led Charlotte with 15 points and Kemba Walker added 14. *Courtesy of www.wwltv.com
