Regular Season Round 79: Memphis G. - Toronto R. 110-114 OT

Date: March 16, 2012
They fouled when they didn’t want to, didn’t foul when they wanted to, had one of the oddest calls in franchise history go against them and blew a five-point lead with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter. And yet the Raptors were all smiles after pulling out the most unlikely of victories here on Friday night, a gem of a 114-110 overtime triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies in a game marred by all kinds of wild moments. “Teaching moments,” said coach Dwane Casey. “We had so many teaching moments down the stretch.” That they did, all seeming to go against the Raptors, who have blown more than their share of games this season. They wanted to commit an intentional foul in the final minute of the fourth quarter but committed it too early. They tried to foul in the dying seconds of regulation time but couldn’t get to Mike Conley quick enough, setting up Rudy Gay for a game-tying three-pointer with less than a second to go. “Those were two teaching moments,” said Casey. They saw Jerryd Bayless, who was sublime with 28 points and nine assists, called for having a toe on the free throw line as he made a foul shot; perhaps the first time that call’s been made in a Raptors game ever. “I like my money,” said the coach. “I’ve not seen it but he called it so we have to go with it.” And then, for one final indignity, they fouled Conley attempting a three-point shot with Toronto up three with 5.7 seconds left in OT only to be bailed out when Conley missed the second of his shots. “It seemed like we were trying to find ways to give it to them but (we) stuck together, hung together,” said Casey. “Jerryd did a great job in timeouts saying, ‘Hey, let’s go.’ He wouldn’t let anybody quit and as a coach I didn’t have to say anything, I was really happy to see him take the bull by the horns and show some leadership.” Bayless was helped enormously by the presence of Gary Forbes, who had a career-high 20 points in his first game since being handed a key role after the trade of Leandro Barbosa. Splitting time at point guard and shooting guard, Forbes was a force and allowed Bayless to roam a bit more freely than he was able to do with Barbosa dominating the ball. “It helped him out a little bit having Gary Forbes in there … at the two position and some at the three. Forbes moving to a natural position allowed (Bayless) to be able to go to work … and having Forbes spaced and Andrea (Bargnani) spaced allowed him some room to operate,” said Casey. Bargnani, who played 39 minutes, had 18 for Toronto while Marc Gasol had 28 for Memphis. The role for the 22-year-old Forbes was clearly defined when the Raptors moved Barbosa to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. As much as the financial flexibility created by the move was necessary, it was also done to give Forbes a legitimate shot to show what he’s got. Forbes admitted extended time at the point guard position did not play to his defensive strengths. “Point guards ... has been a little bit of a struggle,” he said Friday morning. “Those guards are quicker and experienced at the position. “It’s just a work in progress, I’m still a young player in the league and learning so these last 22 or whatever games we’ve got will be a learning process for me and I’m sure I’ll be able to catch on quickly.” *Courtesy of www.thestar.com
