Regular Season Round 62: Canton C. - Erie Bay H. 124-121
Date: March 17, 2012
Circumstances change each day in the NBA Development League. Whatever the case, all the Canton Charge seem to do anymore is win. The Charge finally grabbed control of a close game in the fourth quarter and held on for a 124-121 win against the Erie BayHawks at Memorial Civic Center on Saturday night. Their season-high fifth straight win puts Canton in first place in the Eastern Conference at 24-18. The Charge got back in town from Friday’s win in Iowa at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The tip against Erie was scheduled for 3 1/2 hours later. Then a random drug test was sprung on the Charge to further complicate the pre-game. “Of all days,” Charge Head Coach Alex Jensen said before the game. No problem. Canton entertained a spirited St. Patrick’s Day crowd of 2,863 with its seventh win in the last eight games and 11th in the last 13. It was a game that was begging for someone to grab control. With a lot of help from point guard T.J. Campbell, the Charge finally obliged. Campbell was fantastic in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 of his team-high 27 points and breaking down Erie’s defense repeatedly. Campbell had seven assists and made 11 of 13 free throws, including 9 of 10 in the final period. “He makes the coaching staff and his teammates look great,” Jensen said. “You put him in a ball-screen situation and he’s so hard to guard. He makes the right play most of the time.” The Charge made their first 15 free throws of the fourth quarter and finished 18-of-21 in the period. A Kyle Gibson 3-pointer, followed by a Shane Edwards’ breakaway dunk off a steal and assist from Gibson, broke an 80-80 tie after three quarters and put the Charge on top for good. Their lead grew to as many as 10, but Erie never went away. Luke Harangody totaled 20 points and 15 rebounds for Canton, which committed 19 turnovers but shot a sizzling 58.9 percent from the floor. Off the bench, Gibson scored 15 points and Frank Hassell added 14 points and seven rebounds. “Great gritty win after coming back from this morning and landing at 4:30,” Jensen said. “Erie was here the day before, practicing. I’ve got to give it to our guys. Everybody made their contribution and fought through the fatigue of it.” Erie had its own circumstances to deal with, having only eight players available. And the BayHawks might have run out of gas a bit in the fourth quarter as the Charge outscored them 44-41 in the period. D.J. Kennedy scored 29 points, Kyle Goldcamp 21, Mychel Thompson 20 and Kyle Spain 19 for the BayHawks (21-19). The lead changed hands 12 times in the first half, after which Erie led 59-53. Alan Anderson scored 20 of his 26 overall points and the Charge shot 54.1 percent from the field in the first two quarters, but Erie didn’t commit a single turnover and got off 15 more shots than Canton. The Charge stayed close but trailed the entire third quarter until Hassell’s extra-effort bucket and Edwards’ jumper off a Campbell feed in the final minute tied the game 80-80 heading to the fourth. *Courtesy of www.cantonrep.com
