Regular Season Round 80: Denver N. - Boston C. 98-91

Date: March 17, 2012
Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points, rookie Kenneth Faried had 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and the Denver Nuggets held on to beat the Boston Celtics 98-91 on Saturday night. Kevin Garnett had 22 points and eight rebounds and Rajon Rondo had 12 points and 16 assists for the Celtics, which dropped their second straight game. Gallinari, who struggled to find his rhythm after missing a month with a severely sprained left ankle, has put up strong numbers in three straight games. He scored 15 points in the first half to set the tone for the Nuggets, who are now 4-3 on this current nine-game homestand. Paul Pierce also had 22 points for the Celtics, who were coming off a 120-95 loss to Sacramento on Friday, their second loss in the last six by at least 25 points. Boston is now 2-3 on this current eight-game road trip that spans both coasts. The travel seemed to bother the Celtics early in the second half. Denver, which has struggled offensively in the third quarter since the All-Star break, came out strong after intermission. The Nuggets quickly turned a 13-point advantage into a 79-62 lead on a dunk by Arron Afflalo late in the quarter. Down 87-77 in the fourth, Boston made it a game. Two free throws from Pierce and three straight baskets by Garnett made it 87-83 with 5:17 left. After a Denver turnover, Pierce drained a foul-line jumper to cut it to two, but he fouled out on Denver's next possession. The teams traded baskets before Ty Lawson drained a corner 3-pointer to put Denver ahead 92-87 with 3:01 left. After a Garnett miss, Lawson fed Faried for an alley-oop dunk that stretched the lead to 94-87 with 2:18 left. Garnett hit four straight free throws, but Ray Allen missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it with 55 seconds left and Denver held on. Denver led by as many as nine in the first quarter but Pierce kept the Celtics in striking distance with eight early points. Boston got back within 31-27 on Avery Bradley's layup at the 9:25 mark of the second, and that's when Denver's defense turned steals into points. Andre Miller had two straight steals and fed Corey Brewer on a layup and dunk, and then Brewer came up with another steal that led to a bucket by Harrington to make it 38-27. The Celtics pulled to within four late in the second, but Faried, who recorded his sixth double-double of the season, had two offensive rebounds and layups to spark a 13-6 run that gave Denver a 55-42 lead at halftime. *Courtesy of Yahoo!
