Regular Season Round 63: Iowa E. - Sioux Falls S. 101-114

Date: March 18, 2012
Marqus Blakely nailed a 3-pointer right in front of the Iowa Energy bench Sunday, then turned and glared at his former teammates. It was a not-so-subtle message that the Sioux Falls Skyforce are no longer to be trifled with. And the Energy have had a bit of swagger knocked out of them. Sioux Falls sent Iowa to its fourth consecutive loss with a 114-101 victory before an announced crowd of 3,895 at Wells Fargo Arena. “Going into it, it felt a little personal, I guess. I would hope it would feel the same way on the other end. That’s why you compete every night,” said Blakely, who was traded by Iowa for Patrick Ewing Jr. five weeks ago. “Stuff happens. It’s a business. I’m not going to stop playing and I’m not going to get down on myself because I got traded.” Blakely delivered a couple of hard fouls early, put down a trio of vehement dunks, and repeatedly shot pointed looks at the Iowa bench. He finished with 18 points. “I know when I was on Iowa, the Skyforce was one of the teams we’d beat up on. So it’s good to be on the opposing end and get a win,” he said after helping lowly Sioux Falls (13-29) win its third in a row. Xavier Henry, meanwhile, found himself in the middle of the blood feud of sorts. The New Orleans Hornets sent the one-time Kansas star down for Sunday’s game hoping he’d rediscover some passion for the game. The second-year pro, who left the Jayhawks after one season, averaged 5 points in 24 games with the Hornets. The first thing he discovered was that the officiating in the NBA Development League isn’t always sharp. He was whistled for two quick fouls, re-entered the game in the second quarter and soon picked up a third on a play when he just happened to be standing near a Skyforce player who tripped over his own feet. “The coach went crazy and I was like, ‘Oh, man.’ I didn’t even know what to do in the situation because it never happened to me before,” he said. After playing just four first-half minutes, Henry showed an impressive ability to finish near the rim in the second half, scoring 13 points despite not getting a jumpshot to fall. He’s heading back to New Orleans today because of injuries to the parent club, but Iowa coach Kevin Young said he may return if the Hornets get back to full health. “I haven’t been playing how I’m used to playing. I’m trying to get my mentality back of being aggressive, playing defense, going hard. It was a good test today,” Henry said. “I was hoping we could get a win out of (the Energy). I knew they were on a little losing streak, but they’re still second in the league. I was trying to help jump-start something. I didn’t get the best out of me today with my jumper, but that wasn’t the only problem we had.” It certainly wasn’t. Iowa went to a zone defense because Sioux Falls isn’t proficient from the 3-point line, only to allow 54-percent shooting (41-of-76). The game was heated, with five technical fouls being whistled, but Sioux Falls seemed to have the mental edge on the reigning D-League champions. “We’re not playing like a hungry basketball team for whatever reason, when we absolutely should be if you look at the standings,” Young said. *Courtesy of https://dmjuice.desmoinesregister.com
