Regular Season Round 64: Santa Cruz W. - Springfield A. 98-93
Date: March 19, 2012
The Springfield Armor left for their four-game, five-day road trip tied for first place in the D-Leagues East Conference. Three losses later, the Armor suddenly find themselves on the fringe of the playoff picture. Heading into Mondays game against the Dakota Wizards, five teams were separated by a half-game in the overall standings, including both Springfield and Dakota. Thats why the Armors 98-93 loss to the Wizards was so costly. The victory dropped the Armor to 22-19, a half-game behind Dakota (23-19). Springfield is now tied for fourth in the East and is in a three-way deadlock for seventh overall. The top eight teams qualify for the postseason. There's 10 teams between 21 and 26 wins, and only seven of them are getting in, Armor coach Bob MacKinnon said. Each team was playing with its leading scorer in the NBA, Springfields Jerry Smith with the New Jersey Nets and Dakotas Edwin Ubiles with the Washington Wizards. The Armor did get back center Jeff Foote (7'0'-C-88, college: Cornell), who had a big game with 18 points and 13 rebounds. I think hes going to have a 12-year NBA career, MacKinnon said. When youve got a guy whos going to be an NBA player on your roster, its a quality player. Weve been playing a couple players short for a couple of weeks now. It didnt help that Dennis Horner, Springfields leading scorer after Smith, was slowed by back spasms and plagued with foul trouble. He played just 11 minutes and didnt score. The teams traded the lead until early in the second, when the Armor gained the upper hand with a 14-1 run, turning a 28-23 deficit into a 37-29 lead. Springfields press harried the Wizards into 11 first-half turnovers leading to 13 points. The Armor also earned some style points with a vicious tomahawk dunk from L.D. Williams. Three-pointers from Jameson Curry (6'4'-G-86, agency: Strategic Sports, college: Oklahoma St.) and Lance Hurdle ensured the Armor held their lead, 51-44, at the break. Curry poured in 15 of his 23 points in the first half. The Wizards turned up their defensive intensity in the third. The result was a brutal offensive quarter for the Armor, who shot 5 for 23 and turned the ball over eight times after having done so just six times in the first half. Even more damaging, the Wizards converted those turnovers into 15 points. Dakota headed into the final quarter with a 67-63 edge. The game remained tight deep into the fourth, Springfields Damian Johnson (6'7'-F-87, agency: Edge Sports, college: Minnesota) tying it at 83 with 4:24 to go. The Wizards took control with three consecutive 3-pointers the first two by Shy Ely, the third by Leo Lyons. Marcus Dove (6'9'-F-85, college: Oklahoma St.) had 26 points and Stefhon Hannah (6'1'-G-85, college: Missouri) 24 for the Wizards. The Armor wrap up their trip Tuesday at Sioux Falls.
