Regular Season Round 64: Erie Bay H. - Canton C. 92-109

Date: March 22, 2012
The Canton Charge are displaying a revolutionary concept in a me-first league. Unselfish, team basketball. And it is translating to wins. Kyle Gibson and Frank Hassell scored 47 combined points off the bench and the Charge ran away from the Erie BayHawks in the fourth quarter for a 109-92 win Thursday night at Tullio Arena. A crowd of 2,015 watched Canton extend its season-best seven-game winning streak with various contributions. The Eastern Conference-leading Charge (26-18) are playing with the togetherness one might see in a good high school or college team. Talented wing Alan Anderson struggled a bit Thursday, but there he was in the fourth quarter, playing the role of the Charge’s biggest cheerleader as Gibson and Hassell closed out the win. “Since I’ve been here I’ve seen new faces coming in every other week,” the 6-foot-8 Hassell said. “How we’ve jelled is kind of unique. We all love playing together and sharing the ball.” Thursday was a homecoming of sorts for Hassell. The Charge traded him to the BayHawks in mid February. Hassell spent two days in Erie before he failed a physical, which negated the trade and sent him back to Canton. He looked physically able Thursday. Hassell totaled 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds as the Charge demolished Erie on the boards. Canton held a 55-30 rebounding edge and had 21 second-chance points to Erie’s five. As the game progressed, the Charge, who beat Fort Wayne the night before, seemed to get stronger. And this was on a muggy night when the arena’s air conditioning was not working. “After watching that game, who would you think played the night before and who hadn’t played for three or four days?” Charge head coach Alex Jensen asked. The 6-4 Gibson scored a game-high 24 points in 25 minutes. He made five of six 3-pointers, attacked the rim hard in the first half when the Charge were struggling to score, and displayed a wonderful all-around floor game. “Coming off the bench, you want to give a spark,” Gibson said. “Some guys got tired, so me and Frank came in and provided a spark.” Up 78-74 entering the fourth, Canton took control with a 9-2 run. T.J. Campbell and Antoine Agudio scored on driving layups, while Hassell made a pair of free throws. The Charge then swung it around the perimeter to Gibson, who nailed a 3 to put the Canton lead into double digits for the first time. “Yeah, nice pass, Q!” Jensen yelled to Quinton Ross as Erie head coach Jay Larranaga called time with 9:16 left and the Charge up 87-76. Gibson wasn’t done. He knocked down 3s on two of the next three possessions and four overall in the fourth as the Canton bench roared its approval. He and Hassell scored 12 points each in the fourth as the Charge outscored Erie 31-18. The Charge trailed by as many as 12 in the first half as former NBA bruiser Joey Graham, making his Erie (22-20) debut, bludgeoned Canton for 19 of his 23 points. Graham scored 11 points in the game’s first 4:07, but he seemed to run out of gas in the second half. The Charge clawed their way back in it behind Gibson, who scored 12 first-half points and keyed a 22-8 run to close the second quarter. When Ross canned a corner 3 at the halftime buzzer, Canton led 58-56. The Charge’s Luke Harangody battled foul problems but finished with 18 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes. Anderson scored 12 points, while Campbell added 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds. *Courtesy of www.cantonrep.com
