Regular Season Round 85: Milwaukee B. - Boston C. 91-100
Date: March 22, 2012
The Boston Celtics brought the Milwaukee Bucks back to earth. The Celtics, bolstered by Paul Pierce and their bench, beat the Bucks 100-91 on Thursday night at the Bradley Center. The Celtics' snapped the Bucks' six-game winning streak, which was the longest in the NBA. The victory improved the Celtics' record to 25-21 and kept them in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. The loss dropped the Bucks' record to 21-25 and put them 11/2 games behind New York, which is in the eighth and final playoff spot. Pierce virtually had his way against the Bucks. Pierce, connecting on 10-of-15 shots from the floor, finished with a game-high 25 points. The Celtics also got some nice performances from their reserves, mainly Mickael Pietrus, Greg Stiemsma, Avery Bradley and Keyon Dooling. That group was instrumental in the Celtics taking control at the outset of the fourth quarter. That's when the Celtics outscored the Bucks in the first four minutes of the period to take an 82-73 lead. The Celtics were never seriously threatened the rest of the way. Besides Pierce, the Celtics had four other players score in double figures. Kevin Garnett totaled 16 points along with 10 rebounds, Pietrus had 13 points, Brandon Bass had 12 points and Rajon Rondo had 10 points and 14 assists. The Bucks, who shot a dismal 3-for-15 from beyond the arc, were led by point guard Brandon Jennings. He had 19 points. Carlos Delfino contributed 16 points for the Bucks, and Ersan Ilyasova finished with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. It didn't take long to realize the importance of this game for the Bucks. A little more than two minutes into the game, Bucks coach Scott Skiles stormed off the bench and protested a non-goaltending call against Garnett, who had rejected a shot by Jennings. Skiles was assessed a technical. The intensity of the game remained high the rest of the way. The Celtics moved to a 35-29 lead after the first quarter, thanks in large part to Pierce, who scored 11 points in the period by making 5 of 8 shots from the field. But the Bucks put the clamps on Pierce in the second quarter and held him scoreless. That enabled the Bucks to take a 58-56 advantage at halftime. Delfino and Ilyasova each finished the first half with 12 points, while Jennings and Mike Dunleavy, who has been playing well off the bench, contributed 11 points. Besides Pierce's 11 points, the Celtics got eight points apiece from Bass and Rondo in the opening half. The game was the seventh of eight straight games on the road for the Celtics. They are 4-3 in that stretch. Monta Ellis, whom the Bucks acquired in a trade with Golden State last Tuesday, played his first game as a Buck at the Bradley Center. But Ellis struggled most of the game. While he totaled 13 points, he managed to make just 6 of 18 field-goal attempts. *Courtesy of https://sports.yahoo.com
