Regular Season Round 87: LA Clippers - Memphis G. 101-85
Date: March 24, 2012
In the wake of the Los Angeles Clippers' losing three-game trip that ended with a collapse in New Orleans, questions swirled about the Clippers' future. Will the team fire coach Vinny Del Negro? Can this team still make the playoffs? Is this season salvageable? While none of those questions was definitively answered Saturday afternoon at Staples Center, the Clippers' 101-85 victory over Memphis gave the Clippers a much-needed reminder of how things could go right. "I don't even know the last time we were up 20 in the fourth quarter," the Clippers' Blake Griffin said. "It felt good. I told Randy (Foye) that it feels good to be up 20 in the fourth and sitting on the bench." While Chris Paul's one-on-one moves and Griffin's throwdowns might be what end up on the highlight reels, the Clippers' defensive energy and activity were the difference between this game and so many others. "Defense, defense, defense," guard Foye said. "That was our mindset. We're not worried about offense. A lot of us can get it going. We have to worry about getting stops." The Clippers jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter after holding Memphis to 40 percent shooting while forcing five turnovers that led to 11 easy points. Unlike it has after many other good starts, the Clippers' energy didn't waver. Their defense remained stingy throughout the fourth quarter, with the Grizzlies shooting only 41.6 percent on the game. While the Clippers defense set the tone, the offense looked sharp, too, with the team shooting 50 percent from the field and 24-of-33 from the line. Memphis took just 14 foul shots in the loss. Griffin led five Clippers in double figures with 20 points. Paul added 19 points and 13 assists. "It's very important for us to get a win," Paul said. "You almost forget what it feels like when you've been losing like we've been losing. We're in a five-game home stand, and we need every win we can get right now." *Courtesy of www.sacbee.com
