Regular Season Round 88: Atlanta H. - Utah Jazz 139-133 4OT
Date: March 25, 2012
The Utah Jazz played and played and played and played — and then played some more tonight at Philips Arena. For the first time in franchise history, the Jazz slugged it out for 48 minutes of regulation and four five-minute extra sessions. After this drawn-out heartbreaker, the organization hopes to never see another quadruple-overtime game. The Jazz blew a slew of opportunities to win this road-trip opener before finally falling — almost literally — to the Hawks by the score of 139-133 after 68 actual minutes of hoops. Joe Johnson led the Hawks to the win with 37 points, including a game-clinching jumper that put Atlanta up by four with 16.9 remaining in the fourth OT. All five Jazz starters logged 50 minutes or more, led by Gordon Hayward's 57-minute effort. Al Jefferson (28 points) and Paul Millsap (25 points) fouled out early in the fourth OT with a combined 104 minutes. Millsap had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his short shot rimmed off. The Jazz then thought Millsap was fouled on a missed dunk attempt late in the first overtime. Devin Harris' game-winning attempt was off in the second overtime, and that came 15 seconds after he'd given the Jazz a short-lived three-point lead that Joe Johnson erased with a trey. Millsap grabbed an offensive reboundhad yet another chance to win it in triple OT, but his jumper at the buzzer bounced away. The Jazz, who overcame a 17-point lead, travel to New Jersey tonight for a Monday match-up with the Nets and former Utah players Deron Williams, Kris Humphries, DeShawn Stevenson and Sundiata Gaines. *Courtesy of www.deseretnews.com
