Quarter-Finals Round 3: Maccabi T-A - Panathinaikos 65-62
Date: March 27, 2012
Another thriller was played between Maccabi Electra and Panathinaikos. The Israeli powerhouse celebrated 65-62 victory at Nokia Arena last night taking 2-1 lead in the Euroleague Quarterfinals. Richard Hendrix’s tip-in put the hosts up 3 with 15.4 seconds to go and when Nick Calathes’s potential game-tying triple bounced out, the Maccabi fans let out a sigh of relief. Yogev Ohayon stepped up for the hosts with 12 points and 6 assists. Devin Smith had 11 points and 9 rebounds, while Hendrix added 9 points and 7 boards. Mike Batiste had 13 points and 6 rebounds for the reigning Euroleague champion. Ian Vougioukas and Dimitris Diamantidis (6 rebs, 5 as) stopped to 11 and 10 points respectively. Maccabi started the game in style as they made 24-13 lead, what includes 11-0 run in Q1. PAO came to 27-22, but Maccabi jumped to 41-28 until the halftime. PAO improved after the breather and closed the gap to 6 after 30 minutes of play and they came to 52-48 at the beginning of the last period. Kaimakoglou and Perperoglou brought visitors to 61-60 with 2:14 to go. Devin Smith scored for Maccabi and Diamantidis walked in the paint, Langford missed on the other side and Dimantidis failed to make a lay-up, but he fixed it immediately with tip-in for 63-62 and 35 seconds remaining. Langford drove and missed a tough shot, but Hendrix got to the offensive rebound and his shot sat on the rim before falling in to put the hosts up 3 with 15.4 seconds left. Calathes tried for three at the end, but he missed and Maccabi grabbed 2-1 lead in the series. Teams will meet again tomorrow. The format is best-of-five.
