D League

Regular Season Round 68: Santa Cruz W. - Texas L. 147-126

Date: March 28, 2012
The Dakota Wizards developed some pretty good chemistry while their best player, Edwin Ubiles (6'6'-G/F-86, college: Siena), was called up to the NBA a couple of weeks ago. But with Ubiles is an element that makes them explosive. With Ubiles back in the lineup, the Wizards looked scary good in their 147-126 victory over the Texas Legends on Wednesday. Ubiles had 28 points on 11-for-14 shooting as the Wizards scored the most points of any D-League team this season and the second-highest total in the 17-year history of the franchise. They fell one bucket short of matching the 149 the team put up on Feb. 9, 1998, back in the old International Basketball Association. One thing we did well tonight was be unselfish and share the basketball, Ubiles said. We ran and shared it in transition, shared it in half-court, executed our plays. Thats how we were able to put up so many points. Some players coming back to the D-League after an NBA stint let their disappointment show in their play. After his 10-day stay with the Washington Wizards, Ubiles took the other approach. That NBA call-up served as good motivation for him, Wizards coach Nate Bjorkgren said. What it also did was it gave him an opportunity to go through individual workouts. ... Hes probably feeling motivated and fresh. And determined to get back. The experience, the exposure, to get to be around those guys and see what its like to play at that level it meant a lot to me, Ubiles said. Obviously it was a dream of mine, and Ill keep fighting and keep pushing until I get there. ... I just want to continue to keep working to get better and help this team win games now that Im back. Stefhon Hannah (6'1'-G-85, college: Missouri) continued his strong play with 22 points. Chris Wright (6'8'-F-88, college: Dayton), on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, also chipped in 22. Dakotas offense was clicking all night, as evidenced by the fact that the Wizards shot a scorching 66.3 percent (59 for 89) from the floor. But when the Wizards started running, the Legends couldnt keep up. Dakota put up 16 fast-break points in the second quarter alone, extending a 34-27 lead to 69-54. The game looked like a laugher when the Wizards increased the margin to 105-81 with 10 seconds left in the third, but the Legends made it serious in a hurry. In a span of 2:18, the Legends blitzed the Wizards with a 16-0 run, pulling to within eight (105-97). The teams in this league are so good, and that team is very talented, Bjorkgren said. Theyve got players who have played in the D-League, players who have played in the NBA. If you relax for a second, teams will jump all over you. After the teams traded a couple of buckets, the Wizards seized control with a 13-0 run of their own. Dakota got three-point plays from Leo Lyons and Marcus Dove, a 3-pointer from Hannah, and four free throws from Ubiles. The only question remaining was how many points the Wizards could put up. Texas was led by Alando Tucker, who had 23 points and Booker Woodfox with 19. Veteran point guard Antonio Daniels had 14 assists. The Wizards got contributions from up and down the lineup. Dove scored 16 and Shy Ely 14. Lyons had 13 points and nine rebounds. Were definitely at our deepest here with 11 (guys) and an assigned player, Bjorkgren said. Whether were at our best is yet to be determined. The Wizards and Legends came into the game with identical 24-20 records, tied for sixth in the overall standings. The top eight make the playoffs. They meet again tonight at the Civic Center. The Wizards, who have won five of their last six games, seem to be peaking at exactly the right time. As the season goes on some teams get better, some stay where theyre at and some teams get worse, Ubiles said. ... I definitely think that we were one of the teams that started off slow but continue get better. Courtesy of https://bismarcktribune.com
