Regular Season Round 92: Miami Heat - Dallas M. 106-85

Date: March 29, 2012
It was clear even hours before tipoff, the Heat was ready to put a stop to its recent lackluster efforts. Back home and with another chance to get a little payback against the team that denied it a championship last June, the Heat recovered its energy and snapped a losing streak at two games with a 106-85 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night at AmericanAirlines Arena. “It was a total team win, and everyone did something positive,” Dwyane Wade said. “We’re going to need that playing three games in four nights.” At least for one night, the Heat (36-13) shed its recent woes and pulled away from the Mavericks behind some intense defense in the second half. The Heat extended its home-winning streak to 15 games and dealt the Mavericks (29-23) their ninth road loss in their past 11 road games. The Heat is 21-2 at home this season. LeBron James and Chris Bosh each finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Wade scored 16 points as the Heat swept the two-game season series with Dallas. “I think the best thing we did was move the ball around,” Wade said. “Everybody got some touches. We understand it was only two losses, but we couldn’t lose not playing our style of basketball. This was about getting back to what we’re successful doing on both sides of the floor.” The Heat went through an intense shootaround early Thursday. The session was said to have lasted nearly 45 minutes longer than usual. Over an hour before tipoff, it was clear the Heat — and especially James — had a little more bounce in its step. James, who sustained a dislocated finger on his left (nonshooting) hand in the Heat’s loss at Indiana on Monday, was zoned in during the pregame in the team’s locker room. The injury had no obvious ill effects on James, who delivered early and often. James hit his first three shots and played well defensively throughout. He then delivered the exclamation point with a late dunk on a fast break. “It was a total carry-over from the shootaround to the game,” James said. “There wasn’t much that needed to be said. The best thing about [Thursday] was that we didn’t take another step backwards.” Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points for Dallas, but it did not do any significant damage as he went 9 for 19 from the field. Nowitzki had struggled from three-point range the past three games, going 2 for 11. Nowitzki took only one shot Thursday from beyond the arc, and he missed. The Heat also got a strong spark from Udonis Haslem and Norris Cole off the bench. Cole, who has struggled recently, shot 5 of 9 from the field and finished with 10 points and two assists. Many of his contributions came early as the Heat staved off some early Dallas sharpshooting. Haslem played well on both sides of the ball. Haslem finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and was physical defending Nowitzki when he matched up with Dallas’ superstar. Among his highlights, Haslem had an emphatic dunk in the fourth quarter off an assist from Wade. The Heat also rebounded well, something it had not done in its losses to Indiana and Oklahoma City. Miami out-rebounded Dallas 44-29. The Heat is 10-0 this season when it out-rebounds an opponent by a double-digit margin. Dallas shot well in the first quarter, shooting 54 percent from the field and making five three-pointers. But the Mavericks finished shooting 42.3 percent and were limited to a season-low two fast-break points. The Heat outscored the Mavericks 36-24 in the second quarter and used an 8-0 surge in the third quarter to begin to pull away. The Heat will now try to figure out how to sustain the momentum as it goes on the road for games in Toronto on Friday and Boston on Sunday. “No matter what, you always want to defend home court,” Bosh said. “Hopefully, this will give us some momentum. This is a big road trip for us. We are looking to turn the corner. As long as we keep elevating our play day by day, we’ll be in the right spot come April.” *Courtesy of www.miamiherald.com
