Regular Season Round 74: Texas L. - Springfield A. 98-105

Date: April 7, 2012
What could have been a lost road trip for the Springfield Armor turned into a NBA D-League Eastern Conference Championship. The Armor (29-21) lost an 18-point first-half lead and fell behind by as many as five points before digging out a 105-98 victory over the Texas Legends (24-26) in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday night. Earlier in the evening, the Dakota Wizards – which were a game ahead of the Armor in the Eastern Conference – fell to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, 99-98. That allowed the Armor to move into the top spot and claim its first conference title. The victory polished off a tremendous turnaround for the Armor, who went a combined 20-80 in its first two D-League seasons. Springfield will start postseason action next week. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for our players and our organization,” Armor coach Robert MacKinnon said. “It’s a reward for their hard work this season.” Springfield’s players found out immediately after the game that they had won the conference title and celebrated as they walked down the tunnel to the locker room. L.D. Williams, who finished with 19 points, had reason to lead that celebration. Williams’ near three-point play helped start the comeback for the Armor. His basket with 4:37 left cut the lead to 91-89. He missed his free throw, but teammate Jeff Foote – who scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds – grabbed the loose ball and was fouled. He made one free throw to cut the lead to one. Jerry Smith – who led the Armor with 20 points — followed up on the next possession with a three-point play off a made dunk and foul that gave Springfield a 93-91 lead. Sean Williams, who was one of two Legends with 20 points, tied the game at 93-93 with 3:57 left on a jumper. But L.D. Williams put the Armor up for good with a long 3-pointer, the 10th triple of the night for Springfield. On the next possession, Lance Hurdle gave the Armor a 98-93 lead with 2:24 left. The Armor maintained the lead from there, helped by another 3-pointer, this time by Hurdle, who ended up with 14 points. While Springfield’s 3-point shooting made a difference to its victory, the Legends’ night at the line helped keep them in the game. Texas shot an impressive 39-of-45 from the free throw line off of 28 Springfield fouls. That included a 9-of-10 night for Dominique Johnson, who scored 20 points. *Courtesy of www.masslive.com
