Regular Season Round 109: Sacramento K. - Portland TB 104-103
Date: April 15, 2012
Marcus Thornton knocks down the 17-footer off of an inbounds play with 3 seconds remaining in the game and the Sacramento Kings rally back to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers 104-103. With this win, the Kings (20-41) break their seven game losing streak. The Kings never led in this game until the 3:25 mark in the fourth quarter when DeMarcus Cousins scored on a jump hook. 17 turnovers are what the Trail Blazers (28-33) coughed up resulting in 19 points and Raymond Felton committed the costly 17th turnover losing the ball off the dribble with 30 seconds left. On the very next possession, the Kings dumped it down to Cousins and he backed Joel Przybilla down for a layup that put the Kings up 102-100 with 10 seconds to go. “DeMarcus Cousins came out in the second half and played how he can be, a great player in this league,” Kings coach Keith Smart said. “He just went out and played. It's that simple, that's all he has to do.” Game? Nope. Wesley Matthews receives the ball on the baseline and faces up Francisco Garcia and hits him with a step-back three-pointer to put the Trail Blazers up 103-102 with 5.8 seconds remaining. “I caught it. I knew I had 10 seconds so that's why I faced up,” Matthews said. “I was going to space out. I didn't really want to take a shot early as I did, but Garcia jumped on my right hand. My favorite shot is a step-back so he gave it to me.” Game? Nope. Thornton curls off of a screen set by Cousins and finds himself free with Przybilla closing out on him. He shoots and knocks down the 17-footer with 3 seconds left that led to a Felton failed halfcourt shot and that was game. “It was a good pick he (Cousins) set,” Matthews said. “That's all I can say.” Thornton, Tyreke Evans, Cousins, and Isaiah Thomas combined for 81 of the Kings' 104 points. Mathews exploded in the third quarter going 6-of-7 with 19 points. He finished with a game-high 31 points and Matthews' seven second half three-pointers were not only a career-high for him, but that was a Kings opponent record and a arena record. Felton provided a solid outing with 19 points and 4 assist. After the game, Felton said his uncle in South Carolina passed away due to a heart attack and sometime soon he'll have to leave to be with his family. J.J. Hickson's return to Sacramento wasn't electric, but he was effective tallying up a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. “I was just playing my game, nothing too extra,” Hickson said. “I just wanted to come home with a win, but unfortunately we came up too short.” The Trail Blazers are implementing their youngsters for evaluation purposes and that's why Jamal Crawford didn't play tonight. He'll be back in the rotation for tomorrow's game against the Phoenix Suns and Felton and Nicolas Batum are scheduled to be out for that game. *Courtesy of www.csnnw.com
