1/8 Finals Round 4: New York K. - Miami Heat 89-87
Date: May 6, 2012
Carmelo Anthony (6'8'-F-84, college: Syracuse) and Amare Stoudemire (6'10'-F-82) finally can say they won a playoff game as Knicks, and they did it together. The Knicks' two stars totaled 61 points in Game 4 yesterday and forced the best-of-seven series back to Miami. The Knicks avoided the four-game sweep as they outlasted the Heat, 89-87, at the Garden. Game 5 is Wednesday night. Anthony led all scorers with 41 points, including 23 in the second half. He was 15-for-29 from the field, leading the Knicks to their first playoff win since 2001. They had dropped an NBA-record 13 in a row. Anthony had been 0-7 in his Knicks postseason career. Stoudemire scored 20 points with 10 rebounds. He won back some of the fans who were down on him after he injured his left hand when he punched a glass-enclosed fire extinguisher after Game 2. Stoudemire missed Game 3 after having surgery. His left hand was heavily taped and padded Sunday, but Stoudemire provided a huge lift for the Knicks, helping them erase an 11-point third-quarter deficit to pull out the big win. Anthony and Stoudemire also shot 2-for-5 from the foul line in the final 25.9 seconds when the Knicks could have put the game away, but the Knicks survived it. LeBron James (6'8'-F-84) led the Heat with 27 points and Dwyane Wade (6'4'-G-82, college: Marquette) had 22. With the Knicks' season on the line, Wade missed an off-balance three-pointer as the game clock expired. With the score tied at 84, Anthony knocked down a three-pointer over Shane Battier with 54.5 seconds left. Under pressure, Chris Bosh threw the ball into the backcourt for a Heat turnover. That led to Anthony being fouled by Battier while attempting a three. Anthony missed the first two foul shots but hit the third to make it 88-84 with 25.9 seconds left. James then drove on Tyson Chandler, hit a tough running lefthanded hook and was fouled. James' foul shot made it 88-87 with 20.3 seconds left, with Chandler fouling out on the play. The Heat intentionally fouled Stoudemire, who made the first free throw but missed the second with 14.8 seconds to go. On the final play, Wade had the ball and drove on Stoudemire, who was playing the middle with Chandler on the bench. When he found the lane sealed, Wade dribbled out to the right corner and took a turnaround three that missed. The Knicks lost Baron Davis (6'3'-PG-79, college: UCLA) to an ugly knee injury in the third quarter. He dislocated his right kneecap and was wheeled off on a stretcher. Davis raised his hand to the cheering crowd as he left. Mike Bibby replaced Davis and hit a big three-pointer with 1:23 left to give the Knicks an 84-81 lead. After the Heat opened an 11-point lead early in the third quarter, it appeared the Knicks would go quietly into the offseason, but Stoudemire helped keep his team and fans in the game. Stoudemire scored the Knicks' first seven points of the quarter and sparked a 19-4 run that put them up 59-53 with 2:12 left in the third. Later, they extended the lead to six on Anthony's jump shot. He scored 11 in the quarter. But James buried a three with 10 seconds left in the quarter to make it 64-61. The Knicks took that lead into the final quarter -- the first time they've been ahead in the fourth this series. The Heat regained the lead at 72-69 on Wade's three-point play with 8:20 left. But the Knicks retook a three-point lead later in the fourth after back-to-back layups by Anthony. His tough drive with 5:11 left made it 78-75. After Bosh's jump shot made it a one-point game, J.R. Smith misfired on threes on two straight trips. James gave the Heat a 79-78 lead with two foul shots with 3:48 left. It stayed that way until Anthony tied it with a free throw with 2:42 left. He missed the second and Stoudemire got the rebound, but James stole it, leading to Wade's layup with 2:27 left. Anthony answered with a jumper to tie it, and after Bosh missed a three, the Knicks worked the ball around to Bibby for a huge three-pointer. James promptly answered with a three to tie the score again. Courtesy of www.newsday.com
