Regular Season Round 3: Rain or Shine - San Mig Coffee 100-94 OT

Date: May 25, 2012
Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao considered their game against B-Meg Friday night a good test and a good exercise. The Elasto Painters blew away an early 16-point lead and needed to overcome a five-point deficit in the last two minutes of regulation play before prevailing in overtime for their second win in a row in the PBA Governors Cup. Before a good Friday crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Jamelle Cornley, Beau Belga and Gabe Norwood made clutch plays in the extension play as they topped the Llamados, 100-94, for the early solo lead in the season-ending tourney. “We had a big advantage playing them on their first game. They missed some guys and it’s really our big chance to win against them,” said Guiao. “We’re trying to learn to win this kind of game. We had a good lead, then they caught up and got ahead. It’s a good test playing and beating a champion team in this game,” Guiao added. Norwood pumped in a three-pointer for the go-ahead basket then Belga and Cornely had their own key plays to clinch Rain or Shine’s second win following a triumphant debut versus the Alaska Milk Aces Sunday. “We really prepared hard for this tournament early. We know that the key to contend in this tourney is to win as many as you can,” said Guiao. Ryan Arana was their biggest savior in regulation play with the former La Salle Archer coming through with a decisive five-point binge in the homestretch to send the game into OT. Cornley was a huge presence throughout, delivering 25 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and one steal. “Jamelle looks a right fit for us. He’s a big body in the lane and he can play on both ends. He’s not making so many points, just enough not to take away the points from the locals,” said Guiao. “He gives us a good balance. He understands that that’s what we need,” Guiao added. As in their game versus the Aces, the Elasto Painters got past the Llamados with a well-balanced game. Paul Lee, Jervy Cruz, Belga and Norwood also put in double-digit outputs with Jeff Chan, Arana and JR Quinahan adding at least seven points each. The Elasto Painters took command early but the Llamados closed in at the half, 40-42, on a 16-2 closing run. Import Marcus Blakely capped that romp with a buzzer-beating trey off Cornley. Blakely wound up with 28 points, 16 rebounds, five steals, four assists and three blocks against four errors in his first game in the local pro league. (SB) *Courtesy of www.pba.ph
