Regular Season Round 5: San Mig Coffee - Barangay Ginebra 96-88
Date: May 27, 2012
Yancy de Ocampo is not shying away from the challenge, just taking advantage of the opportunity coming his way. The 6-foot-8 center was productive for the second straight game, helping B-Meg notch its first win in the PBA Governors Cup with a 96-88 whipping of Barangay Ginebra at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday night. “Seventeen points after 16 points. It’s 16.5 points a game, an impressive average in an import-laden tourney. He’s really taking advantage of the opportunity, picking up the slack for Joe Devance and Marc Pingris,” said B-Meg coach Tim Cone. “We’re dumping the ball to him and he’s responding. That’s the big key tonight,” Cone added. As a whole, the B-Meg locals outplayed their Ginebra counterparts, overcoming Marcus Blakely’s 3-of-15 free throws and measly 13-point output. “They (the Kings) lived up to their reputation as a never-say-die. They kept on coming back and coming back. But we had a good shooting night and they didn’t. That’s one of the big differences,” said Cone. PJ Simon top scored with 21 points with James Yap, De Ocampo and JC Intal also putting in double-digit outputs as B-Meg kept its domination of Ginebra. The Llamados made the Commissioner’s Cup finals and went on to win the crown after beating out the Kings, 3-1, in their semis showdown. B-Meg pulled yet another one against Ginebra though playing short-handed minus Devance and Pingris. De Ocampo covered well for their absence, going 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the stripe while also getting eight rebounds and two assists against one error in 25 minutes of play. Blakely bled for his points but helped with 17 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal. “Marcus is just amazing with his all-around game. He’s showing here what he did for his school,” said Cone of Blakely, going down in US NCAA history as the only player to lead his team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks. He churned out that feat in 2010, leading the Vermont Cantamounts to a trip in the NCAA proper. Cedric Bozeman led all scorers with 30 points with Kerby Raymundo chipping in 20. The Kings lack contribution from the other players, though, as they failed to follow up their 103-85 rout of the Air21 Express on Wednesday. Mark Caguioa, returning from an injury with a flourish versus the Express, was held down to eight points by the Llamados. (SB) *Courtesy of www.pba.ph
