Regular Season Round 9: Rain or Shine - Barangay Ginebra 93-90
Date: June 6, 2012
A rookie that unafraid to take big shots, Paul Lee fired a huge three-pointer enabling Rain or Shine to keep its perfect slate four games into the PBA Governors Cup. Lee nailed a trey with 2.6 seconds to go and the red-hot Elasto Painters preserved their unbeaten start in the season-ending tourney with a heart-stopping 93-90 win over the Barangay Ginebra Kings at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night. It’s the best start in any conference for the Asian Coating Inc. franchise. For coach Yeng Guiao, it’s the best since recording the same opening run in the 2002 Philippine Cup with Red Bull. “We’re happy we treated the fans with a nice game. We’re happy we’re winning games -- the close ones we’re able to stay focused; we’re able to play through the pressure moments,” said Guiao. “For a young team like ours, any coach will be happy,” Guiao also said. As Cedric Bozeman missed his own three-point attempt at the buzzer, Ginebra let Rain or Shine move to the brink of the semifinals. The Kings bungled a chance to gain a piece of league leadership and instead slid to joint fourth place with the Powerade Tigers at 2-2. Jamelle Cornley helped make it happen for Rain or Shine with another solid all-around game highlighted by a crucial steal off Bozeman allowing the Elasto Painters to set their winning play. “Cornley showed his true worth. He kept the team in the game, showing leadership qualities on the floor,” said Guiao. “We actually wanted the ball in his hands (in our last possession). But we didn’t regret going to Paul Lee. The next best thing is for the ball to be in Paul’s hands,” Guiao also said. Lee proved up to the task, showing great confidence and composure in firing away the game-winning triple off an outstretched arm by Rudy Hatfield. “Paul Lee is playing like a 10-year veteran. He’s taking responsibility, not afraid to take the ball in his hands and put the game on line,” said Guiao. Lee went 4-of-5 from the three-point area and wound up with 18 points that went with four assists and three rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Cornley led all scorers with 27 points and also hauled down 14 rebounds as against Bozeman’s 22 markers and 13 boards. In an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation, Rain or Shine seemed to have blinked with back-to-back errors by Lee and Cornley in the homestretch. After Lee fumbled and eventually sent the ball out-of-bounds, Bozeman scored on a strong drive to tie the count at 90-all. Then came Cornley’s own error off a good defensive stance by Kerby Raymundo. Cornley, however, made up for it with his big steal off Bozeman. (SB) *Courtesy of www.pba.ph
