Regular Season Round 12: San Mig Coffee - Alaska Aces 77-61
Date: June 13, 2012
An assortment of ailments kept B-Meg import Marcus Blakely on the bench in the last 19 minutes of the game versus the Alaska Aces Wednesday night. It hardly posed a problem for the streaking Llamados, though. The Commissioner’s Cup champs sustained their hot charge, spilling the Alaska Aces, 77-61, to gain virtual entry into the PBA Governors Cup semifinal round at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. With Blakely already off the floor, the Llamados threw a defensive blanket on the Aces, holding their struggling rivals to only 23 points in the second half. Overall, B-Meg limited Alaska to its lowest output in a game in the last nine years. It's also the lowest in a game by any team in the last three and a half years. “We played some good defense. I think it’s our best since I’ve been around (in this team),” said B-Meg coach Tim Cone. The effort carried the Llamados to a fifth straight win after a losing conference debut against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Nearing the homestretch of the elims, B-Meg is already leading the field at 5-1 with Rain or Shine at second at 4-1. And the Llamados are not about to relax. “We have no thoughts whether we’re in or out. We don’t care. For us, it’s not about entering the semis. We can’t afford to feel like that. The goal is to keep winning,” said Cone. They showed that determined effort against the Aces, allowing Cone to score a fourth win in as many games versus his former ball club. Blakely had to sit down the last 19 minutes of the game as he got dizzy after bumping his head with Sonny Thoss. “I’m afraid he suffered a concussion. He’s dizzy and see spots in his vision,” said Cone. “He’s got all kinds of health problems. He threw up at the half due to food poisoning the other day,” Cone added. The B-Meg locals, however, proved ready to do the job. JC Intal, PJ Simon, James Yap, Marc Pingris and Josh Urbiztondo all dished out solid efforts as the Llamados went on a rampage in the final half. The count stood at 38-all at the half even with Alaska shooting 42.9 percent from the field as against B-Meg’s 33.3-percent clip. Jason Forte, LA Tenorio and Sonny Thoss put in 10 points each but no other Alaska player scored more than three in the first 24 minutes of play. The Llamados had a balanced scoring with Simon, Yap and Urbiztondo combining for 3-of-5 three-point shooting. The Aces missed all four three-point attempts. B-Meg seized control in the third quarter, leading by 14, 60-46, heading to the payoff period. The Llamados held the Aces to eight points on a woeful 12.5-percent shooting in the third canto.
