Regular Season Round 12: Air21 Express - Barako Bull 100-109

Date: June 13, 2012
IN A duel between two prolific scorers, support is vital. And that is where Barako Bull got the edge, resulting in a 109-100 victory by Barako Bull over Air21 Wednesday in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Zach Graham outshot Leroy Hickerson in a duel between two prolific imports, but the latter had more local support. Hickerson finished with 38 points, three less than scoring leader Graham's output, but eight of the 10 locals Energy coach Junel Baculi fielded in chipped in at least six points that spelled the biggest difference in the match. Hickerson, who averaged 32.8 points in six games for Air21 in the 2010 Fiesta Cup and came up with a 32-point production in a 111-107 upset of Petron Blaze last Friday, highlighted his performance by scoring all seven of Barako's last points that gave it a 109-97 spread, only 58 seconds remaining. The victory jacked the Energy's win-loss record to 3-2, tying it for third with idle Barangay Ginebra and Powerade. Graham, who came into the game averaging 36.3 ppg, also had a game-high 17 rebounds, three assists and two steals. But all his efforts were negated by Barako's relatively more balanced attack, resulting in Air21's fourth loss in five games that relegated it to the cellar along with Talk ‘N Text and Alaska. The Aces have a chance to climb out of the cellar against B-Meg later in the evening, however. Despite the win in a game where Barako Bull led by as much as 105-90, Baculi was far from satisfied, noting how his team gave up a total 92 field attempts to the Express. "We cannot outshoot every opponent in this league. We're not that strong offensively. We have to change our state of mind about it," he stated. One thing that also nagged at Baculi was the way his charges got outrebounded from the beginning of the game and until the end, resulting in a 51-58 discrepancy in that department. "I got mad in the dugout during halftime because we were outrebounded even though we were taller than them," said Baculi, noting how that has been the trend in all their games so far. "We were just lucky we're winning," he explained. "When we get outrebounded most often than not we lose. We have to step up further if we want to advance." What gives him the additional sense of urgency he wants to impart to his charges is their upcoming schedule in which they will be facing Rain or Shine, Talk 'N Text and Ginebra in succession. "It's a tough grind for us, so we have to be mentally prepared. We're too relaxed in our plays," he maintained. Danny Seigle failed to see action anew due to a injured calf muscle, but Mick Pennisi, Douglas Kramer, Don Allado and Reil Cervantes lent ample support in the frontline by combining for 39 points and 27 rebounds. Still, Baculi made it plain he misses Seigle. "Danny will start practicing pa on Monday. We don't want to push the issue on him, but we need another big guy to help us out in our rebounding woes," he said. Veterans Willie Miller and Mick Pennisi provided the most noteworthy backup for Hickerson in the stretches Barako needed them most. Miller sprang to life in the fourth period, making all his first four shots from the field–all difficult ones–that helped Barako surge to a 98-84 spread, going to the last 5:41 of the game. Pennisi was in a similar zone during the third period, booming in three straight triples and helped Hickerson yank the Energy away from a 53-51 count and into double digit leads, including a 69-55 difference. As has been the case in most of its games, Air21 started out flat but came charging back strong as the game wore on, riding the shoulders of Graham and James Sena in razing a 23-33 deficit and even briefly taking a 41-40 edge on the strength of a 6-0 run anchored on Bitoy Omolon. Barako Bull regrouped in time, however, using a balanced 13-6 surge to take the half at 53-47. (NC) *Courtesy of www.pba.ph
