Puerto Rican U18 National Team posted the first win at the Fiba Americas Championship in Sao Bernardo. They held off Virgin Islands in the classification round. Wilfredo Rodriguez scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the winners. Puerto Rico will now take on Mexico in the fight for the fifth place. Virgin Islands got to the better start. They established a 19:12 lead at the first intermission. Puerto Rico cut the distance to get within 3 points at the interval 34:37. Puerto Rico surged ahead in the third quarter. They posted a 53:50 lead with ten minutes remaining. The teams went neck and neck throughout the final quarter. Puerto Rico however survived the challenge and eked out the initial win at the end. David Rosado posted 14 points, while Abdiel Badillo contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Khalid Hart answered with 26 points for Virgin Islands. Kyle Hodge and Rasheed Swanston netted 10 points each in the loss.
