Regular Season Round 18: Alaska Aces - Air21 Express 110-80
Date: June 27, 2012
ALASKA is too proud a team to go out with just a whimper. The Aces dug deep within themselves to fashion a 110-80 drubbing of Air21 Wednesday and end an otherwise sorry transition period on a bright note in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Cyrus Baguio set the tone on both ends of the floor and the rest of rookie coach Luigi Trillo's players followed suit as they wound up with only their second win in nine games but dragged Air21 out with them. "It was a collective team effort and our shots started to fall," was how Trillo summed up the win which ended his team's six-game slide. Despite it, the Aces still wound up with their worst season ever in terms of victories with just 11 as against 24 losses. "It was hard for us. There were a lot of expectations, this being a team with a winning tradition," said Trillo, who took over the 13-time champion team from Joel Banal just two weeks before the season-ending tourney began. "This is a team in transition. It was a very short turnaround and I'm still trying to implement my system," he added. "We're doing some things good. But there's a lot of good coaches, teams out there. They adjust at halftime. Me, I'm still learning. If there's somebody to blame, it's me." Alaska top honcho Wilfred Steven Uytengsu is set to meet with the coaching staff and players right after the game and is expected to lay down the chart for the Aces' future. "We'll think things over. We'll see first what's on his mind and then we'll talk, see what's best for the team," said Trillo. In terms of its latest win, Alaska did not do bad at all. It was the biggest winning margin in the conference and the Aces' best victory since similarly walloping Barangay Ginebra, 102-72, in the 2005-06 Fiesta Conference. The loss was also Air21's sixth in eight games, completely slamming the door on the Express' hopes of making it among the top six teams which advance to the semifinals. Even if they win their last elimination round game against Petron Blaze Friday they will still end up short. And no matter of the game against the Boosters, the team which debuted as Shopinas.com will wind up its maiden season with the worst win-loss record among the 10 teams. It currently has a 5-26 slate overall. Baguio was foremost among those who made it happen, scattering 24 points while anchoring the excellent defense on Zachary Graham. The former Mississippi standout scored all his points in the first three periods, where he went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and missed only three of 12 field goal tries. He saw just six minutes of action in the fourth, missed two field tries and sat down for good. His absence hardly mattered as Alaska laced its wire-to-wire win with a lead that got stretched to a high of 93-56 on a Brandon Cablay triple, just 11 seconds into the last canto. Graham wound up with 25 points, 14 below his conference-best average, after making just eight of 27 field tries. The output also came on the heels of his 51-point output in a 128-121 win over Powerade last Friday, the highest output by any player in the league in the last four seasons. "We really tried to take them away from their strengths, which is Graham," explained Trillo. "Him coming off a 51-point explosion, there's added respect there." Only Ren-ren Ritualo was the other Express in double digits with 11. Jason Forte led all scorers with 26 points on top of 12 rebounds, six assists and two steals. LA Tenorio added 19, including 10 in the third period, and also had 11 boards and six feeds. As a team, Alaska made 40 of 76 field attempts compared to Air21's 30-for-84 clip. The Aces also had a 52-41 advantage off the boards. Those numbers all spelled the Aces' domination of the game as they led by 56-32 at the half and by 70-40, on a Baguio twinner, midway in the third. Air21 mustered enough of a challenge to make it 52-74 game, but Tenorio buried a triple, Gabby Espinas scored seven points and Forte six that sparked and fuelled a 13-4 surge to end the quarter and give Alaska a 34-point spread. Graham showed some of his fiery form only in the third period with 15, but he was visibly struggling against Baguio, who mainly limited him to just four points in the opening quarter and a total of six at the half.
