Regular Season Round 18: San Mig Coffee - Talk N Text 72-89

Date: June 27, 2012
Resurgent Talk n Text got back at Commissioner’s Cup finals tormentor B-Meg, 89-72, Wednesday night, stretching its searing run to four games and assuring itself of at least a playoff for a seat in the PBA Governors Cup semifinal round. Before another good crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Tropang Texters sustained their romp, beating the Llamados in a low-scoring duel and, in the process, forging a tie between themselves at 5-3. Both still need to win their final assignment in the elims to seal entry into the six-team semis. B-Meg plays Powerade in the tourney’s last out-of-town tussle in Legazpi, Albay Saturday while Talk n Text is up versus front-runner Rain or Shine at the close of the elims at the Big Dome Sunday. “Four other teams can still make 5-3. We’re still at the mercy of quotient that’s why we’re pushing it till the end,” said Reyes on their unwavering stand versus the Llamados. The Texters jumped the gun on the Llamados, taking the first quarter at 22-10 and refusing to relax until the end. And they’re determined to get going versus the Elasto Painters. “As much as we’d like to relax and celebrate, we can’t. We have to make sure we have to be ready for Rain or Shine. That’s a team playing best basketball to date,” Reyes said. Even if Talk n Text gains free passage into the semis, the Texters will surely go all out against the Elasto Painters as what the “carryover” format requires. Rain or Shine can’t be expected to relax either. The Elasto Painters set out for their battle with a 7-1 slate. The Texters moved to within two games of the Elasto Painters following their amazing four-game streak coming back from a two-week break. Larry Fonacier, Jayson Castro, Ranidel de Ocampo, Paul Harris and Kelly Williams put in double-digit outputs while Ryan Reyes and Aaron Aban made their presence felt on their tough defense on James Yap as the Texters rolled past the Llamados. “Aban’s and Reyes’ defense on James was a big key. We’re able to take away a big part of their offense,” said Reyes. Yap made only nine points on 2-of-18 field shooting and 4-of-4 free throws, and the Llamados struggled with him. Fonacier went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and top scored with 16 points that went with five rebounds and three assists. De Ocampo also fired away four treys and wound up with 15 points while Harris and Williams collected double-double numbers with the former logging 14 points and 10 rebounds and the latter getting 11 markers and 12 boards. Marcus Blakely led the losing team with 19 points and 16 rebounds. (SB) *Courtesy of www.pba.ph
