Play-Offs Round 1: Petron Blaze - Rain or Shine 90-88

Date: July 6, 2012
Arwind Santos made a crucial putback in the last seven seconds, and Petron Blaze survived Rain or Shine’s fierce endgame uprising, squeezing out a 90-88 win at the start of the PBA Governors Cup semifinal round at the Ynares Sports Center here Friday night. Santos, following up a missed drive by Alex Cabagnot, saved Petron from imminent danger and allowed the team to keep in step with Barangay Ginebra. Marcus Faison had his contribution in his debut as a Petron import, helping the Boosters improve their win-loss carry-over record to 6-4. “Nakatulong yung import namin kahit walang practice. Hopeful ako, may ibibigay pa yan,” said Petron coach Ato Agustin of their new import subbing for the injury-stricken Eddie Basden. Faison logged 20 points, including four critical charities in the final quarter. The former Siena College standout also tallied nine rebounds, one steal and one block against two turnovers in 33 minutes of action. The entire Petron team played with great intensity and energy, enjoying a 23-point spread before facing a furious rally by the Elasto Painters. Rain or Shine went short of its bid but remained the tournament front-runner with an 8-2 record. “Overall, our team played well. We dominated the boards. Nakabalik ang kalaban pero ang importante di bumaba ang energy namin. Di nawala ang will to win,” said Agustin. The Elasto Painters gallantly fought back from 30-53 down, coming to within two points at 86-88 with 30 seconds left. The Boosters, however, kept their poise and composure, pulling through on Santos’ clutch shot in the closing seconds. Santos finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists with Joseph Yeo and Jay Washington adding 14 and 11 markers, respectively. Poor shooting from the stripe didn’t help the Elasto Painters. They could’ve completed a come-from-behind victory if not for 11 missed free throws in the final half. Nonetheless, the Elasto Painters showed admirable effort in trying to turn the game around. Jamelle Cornley led all scorers with 36 points and added 10 rebounds plus four assists and one steal. The Boosters built an early double-digit lead at 15-5 and pulled away further, 43-24, on a 13-to-nothing run to start the second quarter. Three Boosters in Yeo, Faison and Santos had put in double-digit output by the half ending at 56-39. (SB) *Courtesy of www.pha.ph
