Play-Offs Round 4: Meralco Bolts - San Mig Coffee 104-101
Date: July 13, 2012
Meralco played the role of a spoiler to put a contending team to a dangerous spot. The Bolts’ Chris Ross stole the ball after Yancy De Ocampo threw it away with a second left, allowing Meralco to escape with a pulsating 104-101 squeaker over B-MEG for its first-ever win in the semifinals of the 2012 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum last night. Sol Mercado scored a conference-high 30 points, including a couple of crucial buckets down the stretch, while Mario West had 29 to show the way for the ousted Bolts. After seeing their huge lead vanish in the payoff period, Meralco made a huge defensive play, preventing the Llamados from forcing overtime in the final 1.7 ticks. Down by only three, 101-104, B-MEG had a chance to send the game to an extension as it looked for James Yap for a possible three-point attempt. But Meralco’s stingy man-to-man defense prevented De Ocampo, the inbounder, from getting a clear look at Yap and he eventually threw the ball away into Ross’ hands. The Llamados fell to 8-4 and will now have to settle for a second-place tie with the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings, who also have the same record. The two teams will play each other tomorrow in a pivotal game that just might reveal one of the two finalists. The Bolts, despite being out of it, improved to 5-8 with their first-ever semifinal win in franchise history. Coach Ryan Gregorio was satisfied with the victory. “Finally, we won a big one against B-MEG. We’ve been outplayed really badly in our first three semifinal games. Our character was tested. When nothing is on the line, this team plays really hard and plays to win,’’ said Gregorio. Ross added 18 markers and Mac Cardona had 11 for Meralco. The Bolts were actually coasting just fine the entire game as they led by twin-digits for most of the way. They were still ahead by 17, 80-63, early in the fourth, before B-MEG made its rally to make things interesting in the end game. The Llamados once again clawed their way back and found themselves only down by four, 94-98, with 25.4 ticks remaining after De Ocampo’s tip-in. After Mercado missed two free throws, Yap scored on a lay-up to slice the deficit to only two, 96-98, before Cardona split his two free throws with 12 seconds left to have the tally at 99-96. *Courtesy of https://manilastandardtoday.com
