Spain recorded the first win at the Olympic Games tournament. They outgunned China in Group B opener for both teams. Pau Gasol scored 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Spain led by just two points after the starting quarter. They entered the second term 19:17 ahead. The European side exploded with 34 points in the second quarter. They established a comfortable 53:41 halftime lead. China got within 7 points on several occasions in the third term but Spain managed to post a 69:60 lead at the final break. Spain stretched the gap to double digits early in the final frame and cruised to the victory at the end. Serge Ibaka accounted for 17 points, while Juan Carlos Navarro posted 14 points in the win. Jianlian Yi answered with 30 points and 12 rebounds for China. Wang ZhiZhi had 15 points in the loss.
