Spain registered the third win at the Olympic basketball tournament. This one did not come easily as the European champions met a fierce opposition from the hosts. Great Britain challenged Spain before losing by a single point at the end. Jose Manuel Calderon finished with 19 points to keep Spain perfect. Great Britain slipped at 0-3 record after the loss. Spain opened the game with six points in a row to set the tone. They gained a 22:11 lead soon before allowing Great Britain to cut it to 9 points at the first break 15:24. Spain stayed in charge throughout the second quarter. They accumulated a 37:29 halftime advantage. Rudy Fernandez and Ibaka gave Spain a 54:41 lead midway through the third term. They finished the quarter up by 12 points 60:48. However Luol Deng knocked down 8 points in a row for Great Britain midway through the final stanza to put Great Britain within 6. Joel Freeland and Luol Deng trimmed the distance to 3 points with just over three minutes remaining 65:68. Jose Manuel Calderon made it 75:69 with 39 seconds to go. But Clark drained a triple to keep intrigue alive. Jose Manuel Calderon hit four free throws, while Reinking and Luol Deng dropped two bombs from behind the arc to cut the distance to a single point 78:79. However Great Britain failed to foul any Spanish player in the dying seconds and they got away with victory. Pau Gasol posted 17 points, while Marc Gasol added 12 points for the winners. Luol Deng replied with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists for Great Britain. Joel Freeland netted 25 points in the loss.
