Russia overcame a slow start to defeat Spain in the Olympic basketball tournament. Vitaliy Fridzon scored 24 points to lead the winners. Russia are now at 4-0 record on top of Group B. Spain fell at 3-1 record after the loss. Spain opened the game with ten points in a row. The European champions earned a 28:11 lead at the first break. Russia slowly came back to life in the second term. They cut the deficit at 8-point mark at halftime 40:32. Vitaliy Fridzon, Viktor Khryapa and Timofey Mozgov put Russia in front 51:47 midway through the third term. Russia maintained the lead till the final break 56:53. Navarro and Rudy Fernandez put Spain back in front early in the final quarter. The gap grew at 9-point mark 69:60 with under five minutes remaining. But Kirilenko triggered a 10:2 run that put Russia within one. Pau Gasol returned a 3-point lead for Spain but Timofey Mozgov and Vitaliy Fridzon made it 77:74 for Russia with 4 seconds remaining. Marc Gasol committed a turnover in the final possession as Russia got away with victory. Anton Ponkrashov posted 14 points and 11 assists, while Viktor Khryapa and Timofey Mozgov added 12 points each in the victory. Pau Gasol responded with 20 points for Spain. Rudy Fernandez and Marc Gasol had 10 points each in the loss.
