USA completed semifinal picture at the Olympic basketball tournament. They knocked down Australia to earn the spot in the semifinal clash versus Argentina. Kevin Durant opened the scoring with a three-pointer but the Boomers reacted adequately and soon surged ahead. The teams stayed close before the USA surged ahead for a 19:12 lead. Team USA soon opened a 10-point lead at 26:16. But Patrick Mills put Australia within 7 points at the first break 21:28. Kevin Durant opened the second term with a triple and Team USA shortly accumulated a 12-point lead. They kept the Boomers at distance in the second quarter posting a 56:42 lead at halftime. Australia surprised USA with an 11:0 run at the start of the second half. Kevin Durant stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer. Kobe Bryant then drilled back-to-back three-pointers for the USA as they earned a 70:58 lead midway through the third term. USA entered the fourth frame up by 14 points 84:70. They stayed in control in the final frame. The Boomers tried hard but could not threaten the margin at the dying stages of the game. Kobe Bryant topscored with 20 points. Deron Williams added 18 points, while Carmelo Anthony had 17 points. LeBron James accounted for triple-double of 11 points, 14 boards and 11 assists in the win. Patrick Mills answered with 26 points for Australia. Joe Ingles had 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss.
