Spain will play in the Olympic basketball tournament Final. They overcame Russia in the semifinal thriller. Spain thus took revenge on Russia for the loss in the preliminary round. Pau Gasol scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to pace the winners. Sasha Kaun and Khryapa gave Russia a 9:4 lead midway through the opening quarter. The teams were plagued by misses in the first ten minutes but Russia managed to secure a 12:9 lead. Monya hit a bunch of three-pointers to give Russia a 27:14 lead midway through the second term. Spain cut the distance but still faced an 11-point deficit at halftime 20:31. But the third term turned the tables for the Spaniards. Pau Gasol and Jose Manuel Calderon connected from beyond the arc late in the period and Spain levelled things up at 46 heading into the fourth frame. Anton Ponkrashov put Russia back in charge early in the quarter. But Llull and Jose Manuel Calderon organized a 9:0 run from Spain as they accumulated a 55:49 advantage. Jose Manuel Calderon hit another trey and Reyes added a jumper to make it 60:50 for Spain with under five minutes to go. Andrei Kirilenko kept Russian fans hopeful draining a triple but a number of misses from the charity stripe from Andrei Kirilenko sealed the deal for them. Spain celebrated victory and advanced into the championship game. Jose Manuel Calderon provided 14 points, while Marc Gasol and Rudy Fernandez added 11 points each for Spain. Sasha Kaun answered with 14 points for Russia. Anton Ponkrashov and Andrei Kirilenko had 10 points apiece in the loss.
