Regular Season Round 7: Juncos V. - Aguas B.T. 83-80

A very close game took place in Juncos between Valencianes and Tigres. Fifth ranked Valencianes (3-6) got a very close home victory over 6th ranked Tigres (1-7). Valencianes managed to escape with a 3-point win 83-80 in the fight for the fifth place. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 16-11. But Tigres won second period 24-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valencianes looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Gaati Werema (183-88, college: Prairie View A&M) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds. The former international center Esmary Vargas-Sanchez (191-81, college: Emporia St.) accounted for 15 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side. Four Valencianes players scored in double figures. American guard Yolanda Martin (180-83, college: Brewton Parker) came up with a double-double by scoring 40 points (!!!), 15 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import forward Dominic Seals (188-87, college: Texas Tech) added 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Tigres in the defeat. Tigres' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Valencianes maintains fifth place with 3-6 record. Tigres lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with seven games lost. Valencianes will meet at home higher ranked Gigantes (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Tigres will have a break next round.
