Bottom-ranked Leonas (0-12) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 88-62 loss to fourth ranked Athleticas (6-4) in San German on Wednesday evening. The game without a history. Athleticas led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Leonas' 40. Athleticas had a 35-23 advantage in offensive rebounds. American guard Dominique Smith (177, college: Prairie View A&M) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds for the winners and the former international Stephanie Rosado (189-89, college: IPFW) chipped in 15 points and 9 rebounds. Five Athleticas players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American forward Denise Lewis (185-90, college: Tulsa) with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds and the other American import forward Jessica Fairweather (178, college: Dominican, NY) scored 11 points and 8 rebounds. Leonas' coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Athleticas maintains fourth place with 6-4 record. Loser Leonas still closes the standings with 12 games lost. Athleticas will meet at home higher ranked Montaneras (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Leonas will play against Valencianes (#5) in Juncos and look forward to get finally their first victory.
