Regular Season Round 2: Phoenix Suns - Golden St.W. 85-87

Date: October 31, 2012
PHOENIX — The Suns are a team that might have to grow on you. That growth looked like an infection as the Suns provided the Halloween fright by falling behind by 17 points early in Wednesday night’s season opener against Golden State. Just when the Suns looked like they might be planting a seed for that growth with a rally, their inexperience together unraveled late into an 87-85 loss at US Airways Center. Twice, Luis Scola and Marcin Gortat lost offensive rebounds by battling each other for them down the stretch. Twice, the Suns hesitated when they needed a tying 3-pointer and let Golden State foul in the final seconds. And given a gift by Stephen Curry’s two free-throw misses, Goran Dragic raced upcourt and passed to Sebastian Telfair rather than taking a shot to win in time. This is a Suns season that was to be defined more by its defense, and the Suns nearly played it out to be a two-hour commercial for that campaign. Instead, Golden State reserve undersized power forward Carl Landry scored 14 fourth-quarter points to give the Warriors their first win in a Suns home opener in nine tries. After the Suns took an 84-83 lead with 1:40 to go with a bank shot from Scola on his double-double night, Landry scored the next two trips while the Suns came back with a Scola miss and a Jared Dudley missed 3-pointer. Golden State won despite 38.4 percent shooting and stars David Lee and Stephen Curry going a combined 4 for 30 from the field. The Warriors’ bench outscored the Suns’ reserves 46-24. Midway through the second quarter, the Suns were losing 46-29 and giving up 50-percent shooting to Golden State after a bad stint from the bench. But a surprise substitution of P.J. Tucker changed the look of the defense for the rest of the game, with help from players like Gortat (career-high tying five blocks), Scola (savvy ball pokes and help defense) and Dragic (three steals and constant ball pressure). The Warriors made 17 of 58 shots (29 percent) for the remainder of the game, starting with the Suns holding them to only two points over the final 6:35 of the first half to get the Golden State lead to a manageable 48-42 edge at the half. Dudley’s 10 points sustained the Suns early and Scola’s nine second-quarter points, including the second 3-pointer of his career, kept the Suns in it, but they continued to grind the game out defensively before finding their run in the third quarter, when they scored on six consecutive possessions to take a 63-62 lead on a Gortat follow with 3:30 to go in the third quarter. The Suns stretched the lead to as much as six when Tucker made a follow and earned himself a role down the stretch while Michael Beasley sat on the bench. Despite high hopes for a starring role, Beasley had a disappointing two-for-nine shooting, eight-point debut. The Suns lost their season opener for a third consecutive season in front of an announced crowd of 15,678, which included sold lower-bowl seats for many who apparently chose trick-or-treating over surge-and-falling. The Suns put five players in double figures with Dragic leading the team with 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds, including 8-for-10 free-throw shooting and only 4-for-12 field-goal shooting. Scola had 15 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals while Tucker scored all 10 of his points in the second half. Andrew Bogut, in his first game since a January foot fracture, had eight points and six rebounds, but Warriors wings Klay Thompson (16 points with four 3-pointers) and Brandon Rush (14 points with makes on his first six shots) carried a struggling offense.
