Regular Season Round 7: Brooklyn N. - Minnesota T. 96-107

Date: November 5, 2012
It was a Brooklyn bust. The Nets, still riding high off their successful debut two days prior, melted in the fourth quarter of 107-96 loss Monday to the injury-plagued, talent-starved Timberwolves. They were pummeled in the paint by Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic, who scored 21 points while imposing his size and strength against a soft defense. The Nets were outrebounded 44-27 and dominated in the paint – shining light on the concerns that their roster may be too soft and defensively challenged to fulfill any of their lofty goals. On Saturday, the Nets couldn’t beat a Timberwolves squad without point guard Ricky Rubio (ACL surgery) and forward Kevin Love (broken hand). It was a disaster, and the Brooklyn crowd let the Nets know – booing their new home team as the final buzzer sounded. At least for another fourth quarter, they were still the New Jersey Nets. “Definitely stings, I mean it always stings, but maybe we got to the point last season where losing was kinda normal,” said Deron Williams, who finished with 18 points and 13 assists. “I think it stings, you can see in guys’ faces.” The Nets’ locker room was indeed depressed, perhaps because most of the game looked like a Brooklyn breeze. The Nets took an 18-15 advantage on Joe Johnson’s 3-pointer with 6:09 left in the first quarter, and didn’t trail again until Pekovic’s lay-in with 4:30 remaining in the fourth. Their 22-point third-quarter lead evaporated amid poor defending, poor shooting and worse rebounding. “Just not running out plays hurt us defensively. The rotations,” said Joe Johnson, who had 19 points on 18 shots. “Not taking the onus to guard your man. It seemed like they got all the loose balls in the fourth quarter, all the rebounds, we gave them extra possessions and they were knocking down shots. “We just have to be a little bit more gritty, tougher. There’s no way they should outwork us. No team should outwork us.” Brook Lopez was the biggest culprit. He was abused in the paint by Pekovic, and mustered only four points after the fourth quarter. The Nets center was coming off an encouraging opener when he scored 27 points in a win over the Raptors. “That’s really troubling. We have to fix it,” Avery Johnson said about his interior defense. “This was a winnable game. “Pekovic is a big strong guy. He can wear you down. Maybe we just got worn down there at the end.” The Timberwolves (2-1) went on a 20-4 run to close the game, highlighted Chase Budinger’s 3-pointer with 38.6 seconds left to seal the victory. The Nets clearly missed Gerald Wallace, who sprained his ankle during Saturday’s victory over the Raptors and is listed as day-to-day. Still, it was an ugly encore. And it could get uglier. The schedule only gets tougher for the 1-1 Nets, who next play at Miami. Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
